I can't help but suspect this is a marketing ploy just so everyone will mention majestic and ahrefs to increase their brand mentions online.

Nothing free is even close to what Ahrefs offers. You can try to find group buy accounts (there are some for $10 or so per month) that are good enough for light usage..
