"safe" and fairly cheap places I use a lot are:

dynadot, namesilo and internet.bs

stay away from godaddy as much as you can..

I like to use namecheap, just because of the free whois protection and I like the user CP

dont see 4.95 ???? and expensive after the first year

Stay away from Netfirms - TRUST ME!!

I had hundreds of domains with them and only hassle plus horrible support..

i would say dynadot, netfirms and namecheap.
I haven't seen many complaints about Netfirms although I had some minor technical problems there too, but generally they are ok

I always use internet.bs. They have great support, cheapest prices and Professionals. Most importantly, they do not look for ways to scam you like godaddy and namecheap and other registrars.

You need to use promo code "promo495" (without quotes) at Netfirms to get domain at 4.95$.

BTW,I have many domains there and no problem yet
