I think its trade secret, only somone who is involved in registrar stuff can explain this.
But on rough idea, they dont lose much, its just like any other promotion stuff.

Okay, so I think running for big brands will be a waste of money. GoDaddy does provide a domain after applying coupons at $10-12

they eat the loss, by upselling you hosting, ssl, site builders, website security and other such products. Also some huge registrars get discount from registry in their buy-rate so they offer it at zero profit to customers as a promo.

Some providers go way cheaper. They dont loss much on domains promotion.

Okay. I have also seen hosting providers provide domain with their hosting packages but they are just registered as hosting companies not as a domain registrar. How this model will work?

They are resellers, find a domain registrar in your local country, if you are big enough, you can struck deal with them. You will get a cheap domain. But most of the time discounted price depends on the volume.

Never buy domain from less popular provider. Make sure to choose top domain provider even if they charge high.
