What would be a good place to get a free domain and hosting to sandbox around with Wordpress and just to get the hang of the software?

I've had a look at Freenom.com and it seems pretty good but decent hosting I've had some trouble with.. Any ideas?

If you just want to learn to use wordpress as a writer, then you can create a free account at wordpress.com

They don't allow tinkering with the software though, so if you mean as a developer then you'll need to host your own blog.

If you want to learn WordPress without commitment use local host. Download and install xampp it's free, then install WordPress again free. No need for hosting or domain. You can then play around as much as you like for free before buying hosting etc
