And yeas most of the time, companies with deep pockets acquire fast-growing startups for their users and brand, not for the underlying tech.

The biggest examples are when Google acquired YouTube and when Facebook (now Meta) acquired Instagram.

In both cases, the technology itself wasn’t the rare asset imo. What they really bought was distribution, brand recognition, user base, and cultural relevance / impact.
