Changing the site Domain. Does that hurt?

Changing a domain name, or adding a subdomain, these actions don’t really affect your SEO. These are business decisions and your SEO supports them. That is no fine and subtle distinction — it’s an axiom. It just does not get any simpler than that.

A domain is what is the DA/PA applies to. So, Yah Kitty is right here.

I don't even understand the opening question.
If you change a domain, then everything is new. It's like moving to a new address and expecting the letters to come to the new one automatically.
If you want to use redirect, do not really expect to have all your rankings, traffic and metrics back. If you are solely focusing on metrics for some reason, then I can assure you, there's no good reason to do so.

I recently changed domain. I put 301 wildcard redirect in place and submitted change of address via google webmaster tools and my rankings, traffic etc did transfer.
But I guess doing this is a big decision still, and even more so if your site is ranking very well.
There is no guarantee that everything stays the same post transfer so you need to have a good reason for doing it.
What's your reason?

But Google wouldn't consider it "duplicate content".
OP: I recently merged 2 of my sites into 1, I went through and redirected each post to the post on the new domain. I then build some backlinks to the new domain, and even issued a press release announcing the merger.
It has been 3 months and my rankings and traffic are at least as good as before(some cases better). But it wasn't instant, it took some time.
As for metrics, I have no clue, I don't measure my sites by 3rd party metrics or my dick in inches(sounds bigger when you use millimeters).
