I'm in the same boat as you. I know our content is well written, unique and optimized. Proof in the pudding is how everyone talks about really crappy pages ranking higher in Google SERPS but when you investigate further it's some crappy blog and not an ecommerce site. I can write pure crap in my internal blog and watch it sky rocket in the SERPS. However, remember these new blog posts are brand new URLs.
I think it's important to mention, my landing pages are coming back using my same link strategy pre-penguin and just driving it home harder. I've yet to build many backlinks to my product pages as we're not sure it's worth it considering the BST gigs center around 2-3 keywords/urls. We've also been testing product page rewrites and new URLs with success but it's too early to tell. Since the Algo is sweeping through, a lot of time and effort could be wasted ahead of the next sweep.
The next real test is to write fresh content for one item and put it on a new URL w/o redirects.

my brother from another mother, i think you are on the right track here...
if you change the urls of your money pages, be super careful what you do seo wise and it seems less is more here...
In another thread, a forum poster experienced positive results by using cpanel to move his store into a sub folder. ie:
www_rootdomain_com/url moved to: www_rootdomain_com/shop/same-url
Make sure you do your research first in regards to how it performs the rewrites.
I guess I should disclaimer this.. It may not help you what-so-ever but in your current circumstance, is it worth the try?

going from #3 to #2 doesn't really prove its not site wide, but i do agree penguin only targets specific pages...
The point is, the penalty isn't site wide or it wouldn't be at #2. It would have tanked like the rest of the keywords.

I changed 1 URL about 2 weeks ago and nothing improved. However i did not change the content on that page so Google probably figured out it was the same page. Next test will be to create a Totally new category page with fresh content and see if that sky rockets to the top like my fresh blog pages. If it does i will keep the old relating page around for a week or so then delete it and see if the new page holds its place.
