Hello guys,

I wanted to ask a question about changing the meta description of a website. I did that around thursday on my website and the SERPs seem to have gone way lower now and are dancing way too much.

The situation was the following (maybe someone can learn from this as well :P):

Scenario #1:
A website for more information about KW2

KW Rankings:
KW1: around position 7-8
KW2: around position 11-12
KW3/others: 20-30

Scenario #2:
A website on KW1, with information on blabla... KW2 (IMO it doesn't sound spammy nor keyword stuffing).

KW Rankings:
KW1: 14-23 (but can dance over 30-40)
KW2: 20-30 (the same as KW1, can dance a lot more)
KW3/others: sometimes are nowhere to be found.

Did I go wrong on changing the meta description? Was it a coincidence? (I doubt it).
Do you think it would be better to go back to the old one?

What really bummed me down is that the KW1 which was added to the description also got down on the SERPs, if it only were the KW2 it would make a lot of sense to me.

Thanks!

Ttrox,

I highly doubt only changing one meta-description on one page (or even for the site as a whole) caused you to loose rankings. Take a look at your backlink profile and think of any other things you were doing to the site. Also take a look at what anyone else was doing to the site.

Best,

Shawn

Hi Shawn,

I would like to think that way, but I don't think anything else changed on/offsite-seo wise, and while I changed a little bit of the design everything else was on the same course up to that point, and the downfall seems to have begun at practically the same time the main page description was changed.

What do you mean with 'Also take a look at what anyone else was doing to the site'

Thanks!

Sign up for a google webmasters account and see if the meta tag info is duplicate, similar or non relevant to other pages. This will cause you to loose rank.

Nope, that doesn't seem to be the problem as well. I ocassionally get a look at the webmaster tools to see if there's any problem.
