Changing content on main page and SERP

I have a website that hasn't changed in a really long while, its PR 2 hasn't changed as well. The thing is that after doing some SEO on the site I managed to get it
to first page SERP in the keywords I wanted - but not all of them. Now I think the site needs refreshing (and content is king as we all know) but afraid it'll be slammed down
in the SERPs. Can that happen just from changing content on the main page?

It certainly can, however, often serps restore after a little while. It is hard to say how much effect it will have but content changes often have effect on serps. Why not create new pages/articles to target the other keywords?

What is wrong with the current content?

If you are targeting multiple KWs with the page, consider adding another section to it:
New H2: KW Longtail, with paragraph talking about that specific KW, and related titled image/youtube video.

Then add a few links from other pages on your site, to push that this page is also about "New KW".
Same for inbound links.

Thanks for the quick reply. The problem is that right now main page's content isn't high quality enough, it's too slim and doesn't really represent the site's subject (the keywords are okay though). So I need to add some new content there and make it more attractive and to the point because it's a selling site.
About creating new pages - this is a work in process obviously but it's going to happen soon, I want to release content every week or two (I've learned this makes Google more aware of your site and have it indexed more regularly and with a chance of a higher PR).

If you plan on changing a lot of the content on the main page, or even all of it, then I suggest making small changes in between the website being re-crawled. So basically change a short paragraph, wait a few days, then change another one, etc. Until you're satisfied.

It's a good tip but unfortunately this will takes weeks. It's just too slow for me. I guess that for fast results I can't avoid the risk factor others have pointed out. In the long run more high quality content and frequent updates will rank up the site and give it higher PR so I'll just cross my fingers and go for it.

I worry about this too, as I put unique but spun content on my pages when I'm just trying to get a site to rank. Then when it hits spot 20 I'm going to add 400 words of legit content and put it above the old stuff. Then once it hits top 5 I'm going to pull the spun content. Could result in SERP drops, but I think it depends on your linking strategy too. I focus on domain authority and silos more than tons of links to individual pages.
