Changing CMS: Will it effect rankings?

Hi guys,

Currently my client's rankings are booming, everything is going well. They asked me to get them more info about creating a new website so I went to my friend who is big into dev to take a look. It needs a complete redesign because the site is outdated now. But it does the job and brings in lots of traffic. He is adamant about building the new site on October rather than Wordpress. Which is what the current site is running on.

Naturally, I said no because im very comfortable with WP and I know the staff at the company are too. He went on to say that people are moving away from WP, etc etc and that for a corporate build it should be built on October. He also said WP is 'clunky' and vulnerable.

I'm still not sure about this.

From my perspective, WP is easy for everyone to use and does the job. Its already ranking well, and rebuilding the site in a whole new CMS will most likely affect the rankings. (please give me more insight if you know more about this then I do)... Will changing the CMS likely effect the rankings? If it may, ill likely stick to Wordpress.

What do you guys think?

main thing is to focus same KW that you used before for to make ranking.web platform is no matter may be a customize or CMS so keep eye on meta or titles do same then use any platform

From my experience every change you make in the code will cause a drop in ranking in the short term. You will probably loose some of your keywords and gain them again after a period of time. If it's not broken, don't fix it.

I would try to avoid massive changes on the backend.

I am pretty sure google will see a lot of errors and 404, and after a while, most of the rankings will fall. Maybe after 3-5 months will start come back almost in same positions.

Major CMS changes are always risky. Also I get the impression that your "friend" is wanting to get some work for themselves.

Every change you make can have effect on your rankings. Like seocrab mentioned, big CMS changes are always a risk. You will need to actually make sure that this will benefit your SEO. Personally, I still consider WordPress to be the best for SEO.

If you change it, it is very likely to drop considerably. Let him do as he pleases if it won't affect your job. No point listening to people who "know best" and won't be told.

He clearly has no idea what he is talking about.

Lol @ people are moving away from WP, last time I checked, WP went from 13% of market share (all sites) to 32% in only 7 years.

I also used to think that WP is vulnerable from reading so-called web devs forums, they don't like WP because you are 100x easier to find WP supports than any other platforms, so they won't be able to charge an arm and a leg for ongoing support.

I would suggest you writing him a massive email explaining why they should stay with wordpress, instead of knock down and rebuild, probably suggest him a "revamp" to add some modern vibe to the site. At least they won't blame you when things go south.
