I changed my home page title tag to a two word phrase which matched the domain name(down from about six words),

Results:ranking for that phrase dropped from page2 to page8.

what is the reason for that? Does Google dislike changes in title tag?

    I THINK:

It could be either your site is dancing and it would take about 2 weeks to see where it is finally placed or it could be that by keeping your title same as your domain name, you could have overly optimized your site. If you previously used 6 words of which 2 were the domain match it could be that the phrase is kind of balanced, but your recent changes could point towards repetition of the same phrase in both domain and in keyword.

You could try to build some fresh backlinks with a mixture of generic phrases + the targeted phrases. Either ways you will have to wait for a while to see where the page will finally settle for in the rankings.

Google uses your Title tags for exact match checking...They are important.

Your Keyword should be in the Title tag at least twice...You will get penalized for keyword stuffing in your title so for example if your keyword is Steam Iron. you would be over optimising if your title read "steam iron world, steam iron reviews, steam iron deals, steam iron parts, steam irons" but you can subtly produce something that reads like "Steam iron world the nets best steam iron reviews" drop your keyword in twice. You have 60 characters available in your Title tag. Any more than that and it will cut your tag mid word and you get .......... keep it under sixty...Keyword mentioned twice.
