Change your website - Destroy the SEO?

I am improving the onpage SEO of my website at the moment and I'm curious if Google will rank me lower because I am changing my website.

If you are targeting the same keywords or adding more, you should be ok. But if you change them, your rankings will tank pretty fast.

I do the same thing from time to time and haven't had a problem. Improving on-page SEO is good for higher ranking.

Mate, I'm just changing the title and description of the site for instance. I also make www go to http://, removed some duplicate content posts. I wonder if this will destroy my SEO because Google doesn't like sites which change from bad SEO to good SEO.

Honestly, I wondered the same a little while back. I wanted to change around one of my sites, but finally decided only to make minimal changes. With Google's alogorithm constantly changing, I didn't really want to risk making my sites rankings plummet. I'm just saying to be careful as to what you change. For example, if you choose to target different keywords, and not target the previous ones any longer, as popcrdom29, your rankings will likely drop pretty fast. If you're simply targetting more keywords, I don't think it'd be a problem.

Okay, let us say that I change the title & meta description of my website but I still have the same keywords. Will I drop two three pages because of this?

I modified the Title and Description of one of our sites and the site didn't change ranking. Of course the change was mostly cosmetic - better writing and an added keyword in the title.

I have a website from 2009 that was initially optimized for keyword A because was more accessible. But after a while I realized I need to optimize it for keyword B because even if it is 10 times harder from SEO point of view, on the long run it was the best option.

So, I changed the titles, the text...I even changed some links...so the site structure was changed a lot. I USED ONLY WHITE HAT SEO. No black...that is my basic website and I don't want to risk with it.

I also kept somehow the old keyword A on the page in subtitles...so after one more year here is the result:
Keyword A - went from position 5-7 to position 20-25...so it is a drop, but not absolute drop since I still have the keyword on my first page and i have lots of unique links on that keyword.
Keyword B - went from nowhere to second page in just a few weeks...and then gained position after position until reached #1 in Google after more than 1 year.

So, the thing is you can rebuild your website and link structure. If you keep the same keywords, your website won't suffer. If you change the keywords, then it's like starting all over again...from scratch.
