I know people say switch hosts/servers for good SEO - is it also smart to change your wordpress themes?

Will Google think... these 5 websites all use the same theme and use that as a method of connecting the site and think they are "gaming" them?

Yes if they are in the same niche, if the 5 sites are not in the same niche its not as important. good luck

I try to use different theme on all sites. It's hard once you get to 10+ sites, but just make sure you change things up as much as you can. Try to change widths, header size, single colulmn/2 column/3column, change background colors. Font style, footer info, etc. Try not to leave footprints that make them all related. Of course there are millions of wordpress sites and probably millions using the same templates, but it's always a good step to take.

Depends. Your question is, if to "change WP theme for SEO or not?" I believe, once your site are legit and you do not do any direct shit links blasts to these sites, it doesn't matter if you use the same host or the same them.

People are just too suspicious sometimes, and Google might be the same way. Anyway, if your content is good and you like your theme, no reason to have 5 different themes on 5 different sites.

For reasons completely unrelated to your inquiry it is always smart to try out difference themes on different blogs. IM is a lot about testing different things and finding out which convert best for you, in the most cost effective ways possible. Trying out multiple themes is one step that will help you do this.
