Change domain name or don’t worry about it?

Quick question.

I’m in the cars niche. I write content on a specific kind of car. Mustangs For example. My domain is related to mustangs so something like “mustangmaster .com. This is now limiting me to just writing about mustangs. I’m wanting to expand and write about other cars. Based on this, which option is best?

1. Change the damain name to something new?

or

2. Write on other cars anyways as the domain name doesn’t matter to google?

I don’t have much experience with changing domain names even though I know it’s possible but I am sure it’s difficult and not sure it’s worth the hassle if google doesn’t really care what my domain name is and will rank me just as well with Any domain name.

google doesn't care what domain name you use. Besides, if you're really interested in writing about mustangs only the mustangmaster.com domain is amazing. I would register it ASAP if I were you (and if it's not taken already, obviously)

And yeah, you can expand to other car makes later on as you grow big, no one will care...
 
Are you getting any traffic? Better start another site in conjunction, and post the type of content you want instead and as well.
 
This is what I would do in your shoes.
If there no traffic and the domain itself is relatively new, just rebrand
if there is already (decently sized) traffic, expand without any worries

Yeah I’ve been growing it a while so I’m getting ok traffic.

Ok thank you. I’d say my traffic is “ok” at this point but domains been growing a year now. Don’t want to write about “Ferraris“ and google see my domain “mustangmaster“ and go “he is writing about Ferraris on a mustang domain? We won’t rank this....

I had a feeling it might not matter like it used too but have zero experience with this so thank you.

wont matter that much.
Can make your site look super dedicated towards "mustangs" but always willing to explore outside the "mustangs" group so it's not just "Biased" towards mustangs
It will do just fine like that

If you are super worried, you can just make a new one, 301 it over, but will loose some of your current rankings & risk losing all of it too.

I don’t really wanna risk losing any rankings, so I’d rather LOOK more dedicated to one thing as long as it doesn’t affect how I’d actually rank on google.
 
A domain name is doesn't matter for Google!

But the Domain name is the Identity of your Brand.
 
Well i suppose even being just called mustang gives you some authority to talk about other cars and brands as well. You can perhaps make comparisons to some mustang models etc so that would justify the domain name.

But regarding google, just go with it, it doesnt matter to google as much it matters to people.
 
Just do what's right to not confuse your users.
mustang = users will expect just mustang info
cars = they'll expect any car info
G doesn't cares, it's your users who care
 
If no traffic, change the domain. Or else just stick to that and expand to other cars.
 
If you want to make it an authority blog, you should change the domain name to include all cars.
 
For algorithms, it's not important which domain name you will use, but from a user experience perspective, it would be better to choose some more general names for the site, something that could encapsulate different types of cars. I wouldn't name it after just one brand if you plan to write about more of them.
 
My suggestion is that if you write a topic about one specific brand of car, you should pick a domain name of that brand, or if you write a topic about multiple brands of cars, you can choose a common domain name. (Note: Whenever you create a domain name, make sure that it is in brand names.
 
It is entirely up to you, in my opinion. If you want to establish a site with a unique brand name (not specified, such as Mustangs), just create a domain with a generic auto niche name and cover a wide range of topics, or if you want to develop a site around the Mustang car, go ahead. What I see as the flaw in this strategy is that, for example, if the Mustang does not exist in the future, your domain name would lose value.

However, I would recommend that you create the name to a general auto niche and cover a wide range of topics, you won't need to modify the domain names either.

if you want to expand the niche, you could always 301 mustangmasters.com to a subdirectory of your new domain.
