Hey

Is it really possible to rank a website on Google without building any backlinks? Has anyone here tested this and seen results? I’d love to hear some case studies or methods that actually worked for you.

It’s definitely possible to rank without backlinks, but it mostly happens in niches with low competition and when the on-page setup is very strong. Good internal linking, topical depth, and fast indexing can push pages up, but usually only to a certain point.

From what I’ve seen, content can reach page 2 or 3 on its own, but moving beyond that often needs some level of authority signals. Still, there are cases where long-tail keywords with low difficulty rank purely through solid structure and relevance.

Curious to see what others have experienced in different niches.

i saw a case study years ago a user could rank in keyword with lorem ipsum words

but just with a good keyword stuffing

That was long before Google started using embeddings for queries and pages :-)

And that was Kyle Roof's experiment ranking for Rhinoplasty keywords with keyword stuffing on a lorem ipsum page.

It was 2018.

BERT was released in 2019, more prominently in the classic May 2020 update.

Google got their MUM involved shortly after that to replace BERT 2021 through to late 2022 and refined it further in 2023.

Google's MUM then started to evolve and decided she had a name.

That name was Gemini.

Yep, it’s possible—focus on super-targeted keywords, stellar on-page SEO, and top-notch content that satisfies intent, and you can rank without a single backlink.

Yes, it’s possible but only with insanely strong on-page + topical depth. I have ranked low-comp niches this way, but once competition rises, backlinks become unavoidable.

Yes, it’s possible for low-competition niches with strong on-page SEO and good content.

you could do it in low competition niches
but it will take a while, still

You can rank sites in low competition niches through tropical authority and branding. But it'll still take time. In competitive niches, parasites rank better than white hat sites due to their authority.

Yes, you can rank on Google without backlinks — but only for easy, low-competition keywords. If your content answers the search question clearly, matches user intent, and your site is technically clean, Google can rank you even with 0 links.

Yes, it’s possible, especially for lowcompetition keywords. I’ve ranked a few niche sites without any backlinks by focusing on solid on page SEO, topical depth, and strong internal linking. However, for medium or highcompetition keywords, backlinks still make a big difference in pushing past the top 10 results.
