Everything clearly is speculation or "might" be a footprint, as we can not prove anything for sure.
However doing all your blog network on wordpress is a footprint regardless of it is a big footprint. It is a clear consistency across your network, which is the opposite of what you want. If you do this across 50 sites in your network it shows a slight pattern.
It takes very little time to set up a static html page, drupal or Joomla site, so there really is no point in risking it.
A good percentage of all sites made use wordpress. I think you can get away with using all wordpress if your network is small. For example I only have 3 sites in my PBN and they all are on wordpress. I think having something like 20 sites all on wordpress is reasonable. After that amount it's probably best to mix up the next sites.
I`m using a brand new domain and yes I did purchased pbn links to it. Site is indexed and no penalties so far. And the reason why I don`t build a pbn is because I can`t afford it and it takes a lot of time to manage it. But yeah, I kinda did a "small pbn" by registering 4 expired domains on my niche with good links.
Yesterday, I updated my front page with a 3k article, now it seems to be ranking 49. Not sure if it will drop. Whenever I change content, it appears somewhere . Also , I'm not using any tools to index backlinks.

Building a PBN isn't so expensive, technically you can have 1 or 2 sites and still call that your PBN, it is simply in the process of being built up. One high metric PBN domain will cost $19-20 if you get it from a broker.
If you use cloudflare and get hosting you can use the same hosting for all your PBN domains since the IPs are hidden through cloudflare, so you don't need multiple hosting, so that is $5 a month for hosting.
The domains won't need to be re newed for a whole year so you don't have to worry about that, hopefully you'll have made more than enough money in a year to cover those costs.
You can write your own articles and set up your own wordpress blogs by picking different themes and adding about, contact, privacy policy pages, etc. That way you won't have to spend a dime on hiring writers to make you content.
The majority of the time spent will probably be on setting up the websites. But once that is done you simply have to add new posts afterward when you want to link to a new money site. Also, setting up websites using wordpress shouldn't take that long if you are proficient. Normally what I do is install a handful of plugins to make the site look legitimate. I then add 3-4 pages including a privacy policy, about, and contact page. Sometimes I would add some opt in email boxes and depending on the blog I make a fake persona with a stock picture and write a good description introducing the purpose of the blog. This all shouldn't take that long when you are setting up a new PBN site.
What you are doing is creating a PBN that you are slowly building up, this is what I am doing and I already have 3 sites. I already linked to all 4 of my money sites from each pbn domain in separate posts. I don't think this should be a problem since I'm working with such a small amount of sites. Ideally if your network is large you probably don't want to use every single pbn domain to link to each of your money sites, you'd have to spread them out to stay safe. That way it's possible to protect a part of your network if some pbn domains get found out for linking to the same money sites
