Case Study- Ranking a page with just Web 2.0s

Guys I have a question for you all.
Do we think Google treats each subdomain as a different website. So for example a link from cats.tumblr.com and goats.tumblr.com is counted as two totally different domains?
I'm asking because I know backlinks from the same domain give dimimishing returns however a user on this thread has made 200+ tumblrs and it's ranked his site.
Thoughts anyone?

From what I can see on my GSC dashboard for when I'm used tumblr for a money site, it only treats it as one domain. The same as it does for Reddit.

What is the way it works better? I use a vpn any time I use a web 2.0 property
example if a use a medium website I have to create a profile with a singular ip in a vpn or proxy? I would appreciate your help because in 2016 I remember using a single Ip for a linkbuilding campaing. I created 50 sites withouth vpn in many web2.0 sites with no follow and do follow links. My mentor said it won't matter because I was registering the sites in web2.0 external sites that meant I was using their IP address , not mine.
