[CASE STUDY] Race to the top - testing different ranking strategies

Thanks for this interesting case study, rep added!

One question: "roughly around 5 High PR posts linking to the main domain (2xPR5, 2xPR4 and a PR2), and about another 5 linking to the Tier 1. (3xPR3 and some odd PR2). ALL of these were genuine posts on non spammy type sites..."

Can you tell more about these websites? Are these link network sites? How did you get posted onto these sites if they are genuine?

Another BHW user (Kimi) had a good list of Web 2.0 sites floating around (just use the search button - its called 92 Web 2.0 sites or something similar)

Been searching for an hour trying to find a list. Now I can finally begin backlinking. Going to try the manual method for my tier one links like OP.

Thanks for putting this case study together and sharing everything so openly.
I understand that quality prevails, but I would also like to know more about how you get these links.

I understand what to do, but not necessarily how to do it.
Guest posts? A private blog network?

Thanks again

I use a combination of my own sites, and posting on other people's sites (not bought links though - just guest posts).

For the former, I own my own private network (in one respect this refers to the High PR posts that I was talking about), and these sites are not just the run of the mill type link farms - they are actual sites that have constant content added to them (some normal content without links), and some of my own well placed links as well..

The other posts are guest posts on other people's blogs/sites. These I find by researching my specific niche - googling "Write for us" +"your niche" or something similar (Guest post / Blog for us), and providing them with quality content for their own sites - and in return they provide me with a backlink from a niche specific site... Big G loves these types of links - specifically if they are in-content type links. Some of these sites sometimes have good PR as well - but these are usually domain based PR - and my article will more than likely only appear on an inner page - but I still see the value in these as the trust rank will flow back to my money sites.

so the difference is that on my own network - the link normally appears on the homepage (High PR) , whereas with the Guest posts- it may or may not appear on a Page with high PR.

Hope this clarifies
Any more questions - just give me a shout

Subscribed.. Reading your interesting posts.. Keep updating

Not too sure whether Ill be updating the thread any further based on the linking strategies - as Im comfortable with the conclusions of each of the strategies.

I will continue to post clarification of the links that were placed, and answer any questions though.

I thought it was a really useful study, so thank you very much for sharing it.

This is a great thread, I have few queries OP, based on your experience you can give a better idea.
1. In your first post you said that domain is around 8 months old, will it make a difference if we try this on a new domain.
2. You wrote each article independently. Will a highly spun and hence largely unique article do. May be for 10 web2.0 tier 1 we can have 3 highly spun articles creating 10 articles
3. You purchased around 10+ fiverr gigs for Stg2 will automate tools be fine to create those many links.

Great Case Study!
Do some of these web 2.0.'s rank?

I have been following your thread and it's a great study case for all of us.

Still a bit unclear about your high PR links to tier 1 though.

Do you mean actual page PR or domain PR? How many OBL? How long does the post retain on the homepage? Are the links ******** links? Are you using your keywords as anchor text or something else?

I had asthoning results with strategy 2 - since over a year

Hi

1. I almost exclusively always use Strategy 1 on new domains... so yes it should work - might take a bit longer to see results though
2. I always suggest unique articles - but that is my personal preference as the time It ake to get the Web 2.0s setup and functioning - I do not want them taken down because of spun content. So far - all unique quality Web 2.0s have not been taken down - so I can always use them at a later stage. Obviously this means it takes more effort - but since I focus on building a business - I prefer to do it the slow and painful way ...
3. Yes - go ahead and automate if you have the tools - Im pretty certain that all of the Fiverr gigs that I used were tool based gigs anyways

Great Case Study!
Do some of these web 2.0.'s rank?

Depends on the competitiveness of the keywords being targetted. Both for Strategy 1 and Strategy 2 - yes I have had keywords rank. In some instances in the initial stages - the Web 2.0s rank higher than my money site... but with the persitent linking, the money site rises above.

What you would like is your money site to rank 1, then dominate the rest of the Top 10 with your web 2.0s. That of course is the nirvana ....

Hi great thread.
A few questions:
1)How many unique articles do you publish on each web 2.0 property?
2)Does your private network consist of websites on the same topic?
3)Do you post your link from your private network from the home page or inside an inner page with relevant article?
4)Do you link from your private network to your money site or Tier1 websites?

Thanks for a great case study! I always like to read these kind of threads and even thought this is my first post I am sure I am on the right path when it comes to SEO. Oh and I rep+ed you aswell to help you contribute to the forum the way you do now.

Also, do you think using another tier on the first strategy to backlink the second tier would work ok? or if there are any reason not to do this? I know that using last tier backlinks always help improve the chance for the backlinked URL's to get seen by G00gle

Yeah sure - if you have the time and patience - you can backlink Tier 2 with quality links as well.
Personally I do not do this (just based on time and the keywords that I target) - but link pyramids are a great ranking method

Hi great thread.

3)Do you post your link from your private network from the home page or inside an inner page with relevant article?
4)Do you link from your private network to your money site or Tier1 websites?

1) Starting off it might only be one or 2 articles - but assuming I target the same general niche with 2 different money sites - I may use that Web 2.0 and put further articles on it linking to other sites as well.
2) Yes - mostly all in the same type of niche - but some are more "newsy" type sites that span a few different niches...
3) The home page will have a snippet of the article and the link - and then it will roll off the home page to an inner page after 30 or so days
4) I do both - but with newer sites, more so to the Tier 1 sites.. Having some solid PR5 and PR6 link juice immediately to a new site might be considered too much in the eyes of Google - but once the site is established and ranking with the Tier 1 links - then a direct link to the money site normally moves it up fairly quickly. I normally do this if the site gets "stuck" on a particular ranking threshold - like between 10 and 20 - and then the link juice normally pushes it up into the top 10 and sometime straight to the top
