[Case Study] Maximizing the Potential of Google Discover

Do you see all of these peaks at the beginning? These are articles on one of my sites that performed very well on Google Discover. ‘Very well’, of course, is relative, so bear that in mind. Somewhere in July 2022, I started getting traffic more consistently, which is great for me, but it makes it harder to differentiate between articles just by looking at the graph, so you have to take my word for some of my observations.

What’s Google Discover?
Google Discover is some sort of mobile feed of content from around the web that Google makes for you based on your interests.

Any Special Requirements?
To be featured on Discover, your site have to be “whitelisted”. Additionally each post on Google Discover must have an image which is at least 1200px wide, so make sure your featured image is at least 1200px wide.

Moving on...
Anyway, I analyzed the articles that performed above average, and these are the things that differentiated them from other content on that site:

  • They will interest any single one of my users.
  • They are broad yet very relevant to my audience.
  • They are written very well.
  • Most of them are lists (random numbers work better than the usual top 10)
  • They are comprehensive but not exhausting - no fluff whatsoever!
  • They are not optimized for search, but would be a nice youtube video if I had filmed them - I hope you get what I mean by that.

You need to understand that if your post doesn’t bring a good CTR, it’ll get 300-400 impressions, and Google won’t show it again.

There are two things you can optimize for good CTR:
  • Headline
  • Featured Image
The headline on Discover is longer than in Search, don’t be afraid to go over the character limit if you thought of a good one.

This is your time to be clickbaity, but make sure your headline represents the content.
  • 5 Different Ways to Get Infinite Ammo in Doom 95
  • These are the Best 17 (and a half) Supercars of All Time
  • Have a Baby? This Simple Test Will Tell if They’re Gonna Have ADHD
  • Stay A While and Listen. Have You Heard Deckard Cain’s Rap Song?

Your featured image can make or break your feature on Discover. Do not half-ass it. Make it pop, add some text, and make it awesome! AI-Generated Images also work very well for some reason. Just make sure they’re good.



When I applied everything that I learned (and got a bit lucky), this is what I got:

This is very interesting and I'm interested, might have to optimize some of my posts to see what could happen.

Do you think a post can be effective optimized tor discover and simultaneously for regular search?

By the way, I saw a guy on reddit who was making a killing from discover traffic and he never explained as you did. He just showed his stats.

I was never able to optimize an article 8nto appearing in Discover if it wasn't featured there when I published it for the first time. So, if you are able to do that, I'd love to learn how.

Yes. In the OP I meant that it is best to focus on readability and flow than stuffing keywords in a way that harms the user experience.

Only in the sense that it's a feed. You can't apply to be featured there, you have to be "chosen"

Do you need separate mobile AMP website for this) also make your website AMP mobile

"You need an whitelist website", yes your website will be whitelisted with a clean dedicated ip address so many people here calling it a marketing scam, telling you that dedicated ip's today are useless. You see, all the big boys who ranking top in seo worldwide have dedicated ip on their "high quality websites", so why lower your standard?

Oh ok, he never sounded like he wanted to nor he had the time. He's busy creating content for the site. His site shares short stories(according to him), older posts become irrelevant pretty quickly. So he has to churn out stories every week.

According to him, after publishing each story, the traffic peaks but give it some days it gradually drops. The cycle continues. So to maintain a 'consistent' traffic he has to create new stories frequently. A couple stories per week.

I rarely get on discovery but when I did my images were def lower than 1200. I started publishing everything with 1200 about 6 months ago and it did not help my case much, but I would not go below 1200.

It's easier with AMP, but if your site is performing good on mobile you should be fine.

By whitelisted I meant that your site must be approved for appearing in the Discover feed, and the approval is for the site rather than per article. Nothing to do with the server IP

This is exhausting, but it sounds about right. In my case, content keeps showing in low volumes afterwards.

The requirements are 1200px wide images, I don't know how stiff they are about it:
Include compelling, high-quality images in your content, especially large images that are more likely to generate visits from Discover. Large images need to be at least 1200 px wide and enabled by the max-image-preview:large setting, or by using AMP. Avoid using a site logo as your image.

He makes really good money, in the 5 figures but I've forgotten the exact figures he shared.
 
Just yesterday I was checking the overview of some G Discover sites. Probably the only place where you can get away with clickbaity articles and not sweat your balls off for SEO bullshit.
