    Dear fellow blackhatters

I have been cooking up a little case study for, well, for myself but I guess it is only fair that I share it along the way with all of you since I have been following a number of case studies here which have been very helpful. So let's cut to the chase:

Hypothesis 1: Do EMDs still carry any value?
Hypothesis 2: Does spamming still help to rank a website if pointing directly to the site?

    CONTEXT:
I am currently working for a customer for which I am building a tier 1 site. The purpose of this site is of course to point links to his main site for SEO, but I also want to redirect targeted traffic to it. I will therefore be putting banners for my client's site here and there on the case study site and will count clicks on those banners as conversions (see below). I want to rank this site highly for the main keyword, but don't really care since its just a tier 1 and will not matter if its sandboxed/penalised.

I purchased an exact match domain for my main keyword about one month ago, which is why I don't want to blast to heavily. CMS is Wordpress, i've installed AIOS and optimised the basics on-site. The keyword gets 1300 exact searches per month (8100 large) and it's competition is medium (0.55/1)

    WHAT HAS BEEN DONE:
    - I have published 18 articles, some of them are very decent hand written ones, some are just spun from bits and pieces out there, some are just photos/videos with short descriptions. I was posting 1 article every 2 days approximately, the last one was on the 1st of Feb.

    - I have done a tiny bit of link building, that is a bit of scrapebox and social bookmarking (circa 100 of each) to get my site and articles indexed quickly at the beginning.

    CURRENT RESULTS:
At the moment my site is actually already on the first page, #9!! But only for the EMD keyword, for all the others it is miles away in the SERPs. However, it came up on page 1 pretty quickly and has danced between #6 and page 2 spots, before settling at #9.

So OK, its a low competition keyword, but I will already conclude that EMDs still carry some weight when it comes to ranking for a medium-comp keyword. I think as long as the content is rich on the site, EMDs can still be very successful. The site usage metrics are also not bad, bounce rate around 50%, which may also be an indicator for Google. Ideas and comments about this are very welcome!

However the traffic is very low at spot 9, so I am aiming for top 3 (I still want my client's site to be #1).

    WHAT I WILL DO:

    - The aim of the case study is to determine what kind of links still work well for ranking sites. I'm going to test various link gigs from BHW (if anyone wants to offer review copies for the benefit of the case study!) and I will try to spread each one out to see what is actually benefitting and what is useless.

I will update everyday (I'll try my best) with number of traffic, rank, number of links indexed (ahrefs), ranking in SERPs and clicks on the ads which lead to my client's site. Any comments, suggestions or questions are more than welcome, that's also what the case study is for.

To kick this off, I want to buy a service that provides high quality links, rather than big blasts. I was thinking about this one:
    http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackh...blic-view-able-profiles-service-only-5-a.html

but I have already ordered for another one of my sites 1-2 days ago and am still waiting for report (TAT 2-3), so if in the meantime anyone has some services to suggest (preferably not your own :D), please post in the thread, or else I will order it tomorrow if hopefully i get the report.

    NUMBERS

    6-2-2012
    Traffic: 12 visits
    Rank: #9
    Backlinks: 236
    Conversion (to client site): 1
    Bounce rate: 33%

    7-2-2012
    Traffic: 14 visits
    Rank: #9
    Backlinks: 236
    Conversion (to client site): 1
    Bounce rate: 64%

Note: Please do not PM me about this thread, PMs will be deleted.

PS. Sorry, I didn't want to make this OP so long, but I tend to spread out a bit.. :D

    Wish me luck!

EMD's still rank well as long as they have decent content and the right amount of backlinks. You may wanna check the backlinks of the top sites to see if you can get some related ones to boost your site.

    Good luck buddy :) .

Thanks dude! I've been working with this client for about 4-5 months actually, I know the top sites like the back of my hand and actually one of them is really making me rage, #2, 60 backlinks almost all from a single domain.. check this out... in the past year they posted about 15 articles!! like 1 a month and they're ranking #2.. wtf

the rest are middle-heavy weights, but I believe I will eat them! ;)

Pretty crap day.. only positive thing is that I added sitewide backlinks on 2-3 of my other websites yesterday and they've already been indexed by Ahrefs.. Hopefully this will have a small impact on my rankings in the next few days.. will keep an eye and report. Also waiting for my report from that BST thread to really start the link building.

EMD was never dead. Only thin/spun content was affected. If the site has unique content and intuitive structure you won't need baclinks to rank :)

You could try google+ and things like that. I am not 100% sure if that help but I think that was the magic what help my site get ranking fast.

I would be careful with all sitewide links and here is why!

How does Google consider site-wide backlinks?

I am not saying you have to take note of the video, but then again millions will heed the remarks on the video...

Spam is far from dead, it just evolves and dancing is good at least you are getting considered which can't be said for most.

Thanks for the vid, hmm.. indeed, but the sites are somewhat related, same niche, different sub-niche.. so I think it should be OK. I'll see the impact it has, if it helps +1, if it does nothing 0, if it penalises -1... its a case study so lets study those as well!

Good idea, i'll throw some of those in too.. I have never really used Google+ in my campaigns, this is a good opportunity.

Is this EMD being used for local? I have a few examples of local EMD targeting citys work... but I guess competition is less competitive in many local targets.

Better today.. I got my report for the service mentioned in the OP, and tomorrow I'm going to order a package for this case study. Hoping I can crawl up a few places! After that we'll go for the Google+, should add a bit of diversity in there.

No, its not local, its a pretty generic, two-word keyword.

Just a quick update, because i won't be online for the next couple of days. Still pretty low traffic, couple of backlinks more indexed. I ordered the gig in the original post. Hoping that I get a nice boost in rankings and traffic. When I get back, I will create some google+ profiles, if anyone has any tips on how to use google+ in SEO, let me know cos I've no clue (should be able to work it out but advice always welcome)

    IM all the way.
    Thanks for the update.

I have a great KW for an emd. The problem is the emd is a .org and not .com or .net and I want to use this for a legit business. I'm still tossing up what to do - do I go with the business name with a long-term strategy in mind, or do I go with the emd to get shorter term results? The short term results would be nice but it is really, really strange to find businesses that aren't health/education based using .org domains.

Hi guys, sorry for the absence, was on holiday :D

    11-2-2013 to 15-2-2013
    Traffic: 59 visits (11.8/day)
Rank: #7 (moved up 2 spots.. yay!) :peace:
    Backlinks: 310
Conversion (to client site): 2 (0.4/day)
    Bounce rate: 59%

Moved up 2 spots, which is awesome, I'm guessing from the sitewide backlinks at the moment.. however traffic is still pretty crap, if anyone has any suggestions, let me know. I might try touching up my page titles and meta descriptions to see if I can stand out more in the serps. I've also ordered that gig, still waiting for the report, and after that I'll try Google+.

Stay tuned for more SEO adventures ! ;)
