HANDS-ON

Step one. Facebook/Pinterest. I popped five responses with my site link onto five recent Facebook posts regarding the polar opposite of my niche. See if I can move anyone over to the dark side. Then I spammed another 20 posts with my exact topic. Then I followed some more Pinterest people. Not sure how many. I think around 100-150 though. Got a good boost from there yesterday, but unless click traffic is direct vs social for some links, I?ve literally only gotten nine hits in 30 days from Pinterest.

(disclaimer that I wrote the above paragraph early in the morning today. The rest happens over 12 hours later)

Step two. More Pinterest. This case study is teaching me that being a perfectionist and valuing my time are two completely separate things. So here?s a nice trick to automatically follow Pinterest users. Find a profile close to your niche like I?ve been doing. See who follows them. Scroll some, but not too much. Check using this code how many people are on screen: $('.UserFollowButton').not('.dim').length. Try and keep it below 300-400 or so. Then use this code: $('.UserFollowButton').not('.dim').each(function(i ) { $(this).delay(i * 1000).queue(function() {$(this).trigger('click');} )});. The code puts a one second delay between followings, so after five or so minutes of doing whatever else you want, you?ve got a bunch of new followings! Don?t overuse or you will get this message: "Sorry! You've hit a block (following) we have in place to combat spam. Please try again later.? I know this because I just got it.

Step three. Micro niche same-niche site. Logged into that bastard for the first time in a month to find a bunch of plugins needed updating, so I did that. Like I said earlier, this study is teaching me to put more value on my time and less time into perfecting every little detail. One of those things is that I don?t need to be re-writing content on a site that I?m literally just using as a backlink. So, of the two articles on the site, I had edited one, and the other was unedited and of poor quality. I said screw it, popped a link to my site up there, and begrudgingly accepted the fact that, if I didn?t cut out some of the bullshit time wasting steps, my main site will never make any solid passive income. Am I going to cut corners on the site itself? Fuck no.

That being said, I?m bypassing the Tumblr and other social networks this evening and moving straight into the site itself. So:

Step four. The website. Some design work before editing and posting something. My most recent post from knowledge (BHW member) had a title that was a couple words too short to fit in the typical two-line length on the home page, so I fixed that. I had a category for featured posts, and it had five posts in it. I added a homepage section that was 2/3 and 1/3, and in the 2/3 section I added a large slider for the featured articles, and set it at a five second slide flip time. Saved and checked it out. Fuckin? beautiful!

Then I decided to change the top text and turn it into an amazing call to action with a button leading to the product reviews. I spent about fifteen minutes messing with the design, text, button, and configuration until I got it to how I liked it. And damn, I sure did like it. In the other 1/3 size area to the right of the Featured Articles slider, I put in the six links to the product reviews as a Menu, and the tagDiv social counter for Facebook and Twitter. Wouldn?t you believe it, they were the perfect size to complement the slider height-wise. It?s a good day.

Step five. The blog post. I grabbed another NatashaNixon article. This one was 395 words. I left it as is, just put some headings on it and a featured image, a few links, and a meta description to match, and posted it as a blurb. I was exhausted (woke up at 3:15am, it was past 8:30, and I had been going all day). I pinned, tweeted, and posted the article and called it a day. Judging by my Google Analytics, traffic was shit thus far today. Although I feel as if I possibly had some site downtime between noon and 4pm, because there is an odd four-hour window where there were no hits. Not typical for that time of day for this site.

PLANS

Tomorrow is Soundcloud and commenting on some of the higher and lower ranking posts for my search term to see if I can get some links going. I?ll also expand and edit one of Eternal1912?s posts and make it a featured article on the site. Traffic needs to pick up! Sunday I may do a few things here and there, social media following and whatnot. I also need a little something to go on the home page between the regular blog post section and the blurbs section. I?ll brainstorm that. Stay tuned!

Oh, and I?m going to buy some more SEO services next week as well.

By the way. I checked the stats for this thread earlier. We have now entered into the top 100 most viewed Journey threads in this site's history. Once again, thanks to all of you who have viewed, commented, and pushed that little Thanks button. Your questions and PM's and emails keep me chugging away.

can only follow ~200 people in one hour. after that you get the message. As far as I am concerned the message is not logged, meaning even if you get it a hundred times it results in no ban action - at least on manual following. Dunno what happens if you do it through a console script.

So I followed another 250 or so on Pinterest,and then popped into Twitter, which has been failing me lately, and put in this code after finding one of my rival accounts and checking their followers: __cnt__=0; jQuery('.Grid-cell .not-following .follow-text').each(function (i, ele) { ele = jQuery(ele); if (ele.css('display')!='block') {console.log('already following:', i); return;} setTimeout(function () {ele.click();}, __cnt__++*1000); });. I changed the 500 to 1000 to put a 1 second delay in between button clicks instead of a half-second delay. Maybe that won't trigger the spam filter as quickly. I was able to follow 250 as well, and then I amped it to two seconds. When it was all said and done, I had followed a total of 900 people. Score.

At this point an hour had passed, as I had attacked tasks on some other projects, so I followed another 200 or so on Pinterest. And then I reformatted my entire plan, and planned my week ahead for this project. And that was it. It's the weekend, I worked 80 hours this week between my side work and my real job, and I was exhausted and ready for my wife to come home from her medical school overnight at the hospital, and maybe take a hike or enjoy the weather for a change.

I'll reveal my plan for next week in a little bit, or maybe tomorrow with a statistics update. Until then.

HANDS-ON

Social media first, so I can churn through it again later in the day. Twitter, I had gained 18 followers yesterday. Not as stellar as I had hoped after following 900 people, but I'll survive and keep on going. I've learned to not care about my count of followings. Remember how I said I only had nine hits from Pinterest in 30 days a couple days ago? Well, seven yesterday. So that's exciting. I tried to follow more people on Twitter, but I got the hit-the-wall message where I couldn't follow more people, so I went into-cool off mode on that until tomorrow. Tomorrow I will set the code for five second delays between follows, see if that gets me anywhere. That would take about an hour and a half in a background tab to follow 1,000 people.

I popped into Pinterest and used the Javascript codes to follow until I hit the automated block. Then I went to Facebook and commented on five relevant posts based on my very broad range search term as my Facebook page. Then I found ten related groups (some of them were not going to be thrilled with my wall post) and posted links/descriptions on them all via my Facebook page.

Then I went into the comments spreadsheet I had made and updated it. Out of the four Disqus comments I had outsourced, only three of them posted. But Disqus has been a good traffic source for me for some reason, so I went ahead and made my own Disqus account for this "brand". I had to follow three Disqus channels before I could finish building the account. I finished the account, edited the profile, and verified the email, and grabbed the exact match username. Score.

Comment one, pending, needed moderation. Comment two posted immediately. Comment three was a reply to one of the comments that a BHW member posted on an article. Pending, needed moderation. Comment four posted immediately, was a full paragraph with two links to product reviews on the website. Comment five was general, not Disqus. Posted anyway, and is awaiting moderation. Comment six, posted immediately. Comment seven was a Twitter-login one versus Disqus. Posted, it submitted no problem, but the link didn't carry over. Oh well. I felt that was fine for today. I will see if I can scrape up a list of 20+ additional Disqus-enabled commenting on relevant articles at some point this week, because that was far too simple.

At this point, Twitter had lifted my you-can't-follow limits for the 24 hour period. So I started following 1,413, and ended at 2,285, an increase of 872. It was the afternoon at this point, so I went into Pinterest and did the usual following of around 200 accounts. I crossed the 400 followers point once the followings were all done on Twitter, and was over 200 on Pinterest as well. I had also been receiving the occasional like on the Facebook page as well, so that was slightly encouraging. I went ahead and created a Facebook ad for more page likes as well. Five dollars per day for a week, nothing special. Testing an ad creative to see what happens.

PLANS

Were you curious what this plan was? Hate to disappoint, but it's pretty straightforward:

MONDAY: Re-write and post one article, handle Twitter and Pinterest following process (hopefully 3x or so on Pinterest), purchase new SEO service from BHW, start a Google+ and YouTube account. Look for a "VA" on BHW in the Hire A Freelancer section for a monthly fee to handle the social media following process for me.

TUESDAY: More Twitter and Pinterest followings, gather a list of current links on my site, pop into Hootsuite and schedule them out twice per day on Facebook and Twitter for the next two weeks or so, and post some more comments, record a few narrations of some of the posts to SoundCloud. Continue searching for a VA, narrow down to one.

WEDNESDAY: Re-write and post one article, more Twitter and Pinterest followings, work on Google+ and YouTube accounts, gather list of Disqus-comment-enabled links, research video creation options on BHW. Write-up VA requirements for project, agree upon pricing.

THURSDAY: More Twitter and Pinterest followings (hopefully for the last time), more Facebook group posting, re-do one of the other aged Tumblrs and re-write and post one shorter post there. Add links to the subreddit, record a few narrations to the SoundCloud, start drafting out the massive tutorial.

FRIDAY: Continue on the massive tutorial, re-write and post one article, post comments on the Disqus enabled blogs/articles, a couple more SoundCloud narrations, and a few more social media profile creations as well. Post ~20 links to the subreddit.

Really enjoyed reading this man. You cost me 1-2 hours of productivity, but it was fun.

I failed at my last "authority site" attempt. I stuck with my plan for maybe a month or two. I got discouraged and moved onto other things. I think the biggest risk in making a larger site like this is just that: quitting.

Here's to hoping that you stick with it.

As far as seo packages that I wish you would try, I would love to see you go for it with a package from d3tox: Kratos. I've been looking really hard at it. I understand your fear of a PBN, but this one is just so tempting. The dude knows what he's doing.

In my personal opinion, I really feel like you are wasting so much time with social media. If your site is basically a bunch of articles about someone else's products, I just don't think that you will be "banking" with trying to get a social media cult.

I'd love to see you spending that social media time on focusing on seo packages here. My two little cents anyways.

I'm getting discouraged, but I don't give up easily, and when I do it's for reasons beyond a lack of cash influx. Do I relate to this niche? Not in the slightest. But I've sunk time and money into this project and it definitely has the ability to give a return on my investment.

I was offered and accepted a review of d3tox's SEO services. Was actually the first response and PM when he put a looking-for-reviewers thread up in the Jr. VIP section on December 29th. I never received a response, and I don't believe anyone else did, either. For that reason, I'm not impressed by d3tox's lack of response, and likely won't be using his services as a result.

A good portion of my traffic is coming from social media, whether in the form of Facebook, Twitter, Disqus, or Pinterest (now more than ever). Yes, ranking is important, but having a good backup plan is as well. But I am trying to get the social media following/unfollowing handed off to a VA of sorts, and the social media scheduled out on Facebook and Twitter with Hootsuite.

I do plan on purchasing more SEO services from here, though. I will likely snatch up a few later today. Thanks for your response, your suggestions, and for reading the thread!

I have purchased an SEO service from Rankspire. I had originally planned to wait the two months to receive the final report, but this week I will be purchasing additional services. Research is being done now to determine which ones. Later this week I will also do a roll-up of all currently-reviewed services.

I run Mac, and try to keep my tools minimal. Since I don't want to Bootcamp/Parallel my OSX with Windows, and I'm not looking for a VPS or anything, Massplanner is out. Although it does look like a powerful product.

Massive increases in the social networks finally, and by highest traffic day yet by far. Of course, that traffic only netted me a cool three cents, but I can?t complain.

I started with the usual Pinterest following mess. I was still in purgatory with Twitter, so I planned on giving it a cooling off period. I think instead of trying to hit 800+ in one day, I will shorten it to 500 or so per day and see if that keeps me from having to wait around. Hopefully I can get a solid VA for an hour a day to handle this kind of thing. Thread incoming about that, but it?s 4:45am here, and I?m still trying to wake up.

From 5:30am to 8am I wasn?t able to do shit. The power was out in the office building and I wasn?t about to drive back home just to come back. After the power came back on, I made another Pinterest run. My numbers in Pinterest were skyrocketing compared to the past month or so. It was ridiculous. Like I struck gold. Traffic from Pinterest was getting boosted up as well. Like a ton.

I was planning on starting a VA thread in the Hire A Freelancer section, but a thread browser hit me up, so I responded via PM with the details of what I needed and asked for a price quote on a weekly basis. If this pans out, awesome. It?s a high-traffic member here. If not, I?ll start the thread.

By this time, I had completed some non-project related tasks and was hitting Pinterest again. Somehow I had over 430 followers already and it was still going. I have no clue what happened. Then I drove back to the office and got some office-related work done. An hour later, I hit Pinterest again. I was at 460 followers. This is ridiculous. Then I popped into Twitter as it was the afternoon and my 24 hour block had elapsed. I started at following 2,328, and ended at 3,063, for an increase of 735. I didn?t hit a block, but I didn?t want to chance my luck, and I didn?t want to sit around for the JavaScript code to run, either.

Then it was time for the article. I fired up one of the remaining NatashaNixon articles and pasted it into the New Post area. It was at 408 words when I started. It ended at 590. I didn?t take a ton of time out of my day for it. I added headings, links, fixed some formatting on a few paragraphs, did a quick edit run through of the first half, added an image, fixed the alt tags associated, set a meta title and description that matched my (new) keyword, and set it as a Featured Post and a Blurb, then posted.

I Tweeted it with a link and an image, shared it on the Facebook page as well, and pinned it to my Featured Posts board. And that is it. I had Google+ and YouTube on my list of things to do, but I am postponing that until Wednesday?s run-through of it. Purchase of SEO services will also happen tomorrow.

I woke up at 3:15am this morning. By 5:30 I was walking into the office. It?s nice to have a few hours to myself in the morning to get some of this project-related work complete. I started as I always do with a massive blast of followings to Pinterest, twice. I then sent a PM to my new VA with an agreed-upon week price of $25 to handle the followings on Pinterest (multiple times per day) and Twitter (once per day) for me. While this doesn?t save me a ridiculous amount of time, it does save me sporadic bursts of time multiple times a day, and the stress that comes along with that.

I popped into our soundproof office and went on a run-through of the first article posted on the website to post via Soundcloud. It took about seven minutes to read. When I played it back, I sounded like a creepy-ass pedophile. Especially since this is a women-targeted product, and I?m a dude with a relatively deep voice. I?m going to have to find a female to do a voiceover. Scrapping that idea for now. Then I hit Pinterest again.

After that, I popped into Hootsuite with my site pulled up in one tab, and opened six links up. I set my Hootsuite AutoSchedule settings up to three posts per day on Facebook and Twitter, between 5am and 7pm eastern standard time. I selected the Facebook and Twitter and started churning through some scheduled posts. Every post that hits these accounts shows a little spike in viewership. Traffic is good.

I scheduled out exactly 21 posts. This was all six product review links, the main product review page, the main full article category page, and all thirteen current longer blog posts. Strong marketing copy, links, and images within. These 21 posts are posting three times per day for one full week. Then for good measure I popped the Content Source suggestions into the feeds as well, which put another good 20-30 posts on related topics into the updates feeds. Next week, I will do this again, and in the course of the week build a custom CSV to do this in bulk (you can schedule out 350 updates per social media account. At three per day, that?s over three months worth of links and content I can schedule). Then I did some Twitter followings until I hit the wall. I started at having followed 3,240. I ended at 4,065, so an increase of 825. I?m noticing a pattern with the 825 number.

SEO services time. My communication and results with Rankspire were top-notch, so I wanted to try another one of their services, as well as a different, lower-price option to see how the two compared. For Rankspire, I went with Trust Magnet: http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackhat-seo/seo-link-building/780443-trust-magnet-high-authority-permanent-links-tf25-sites-free-reviews.html. Total clicks, total impressions, and average position from Google Webmaster Tools over the past 28 days. Trending in a great direction. Hopefully the continued SEO work will aid in rising the site up the rankings. This is for my main search term (the green line).



AdSense activity over the past 30 days. Technically the past ~20 days. Lots of work to do on this metric, since, you know, that's where the revenue will come from.



Geographic traffic over the past 30 days. Absolutely perfect. Exactly where I want it to be. From Google Analytics.



Also from Google Analytics, total traffic over the past 30 days. Trending wonderfully how I want it to, albeit slower than hoped. That first 100 visitor day is well within sights, though.

I've followed along and read this journey and I am very impressed with your work ethic. I also appreciate the patience that you're showing but I do think you might be spending way too much time on the social signal aspect of your process. Most of your updates are similar to what I quoted here and the majority of it is about the social signal aspect. I understand that's a piece of ranking organically, I'm just not so sure its as important as the amount of emphasis you're placing on it in this journey. Just my two cents. At any rate, you're doing a great job otherwise and, again, I am really impressed with the work you put in. Like a true professional.

This looks great. Different from the tactics I take as I generally spend very little time on social media because of the huge opportunity cost I waste managing it rather then what I could be doing which is creating content and building links. However looking at your innitial traffic and you saying social media is most of it may be worth a look.

Ex. my 1 info niche site is getting 2000 unique a day and I don't have any social media accounts open for it, not 1 twitter post (but i did get a fiver gig for 500 social signals on it hehe) I guess there is always a alternative way to doing things.

My lazy traditional way - Get a gig on fiver for dripfed 500 social signals throughout the month
- dripfed page likes, dripfed pinterest likes google plus +'s. After about $10 on my money pages targetting the big keywords I stop and forget social media alltogether and focus on high quality backlinks

But this method would be interesting if you could incorporate some sort of virtual assistant as it looks like most of your actual work is going into managing these social pages.

Does hootsuite have a plugin to wordpress that automatically reposts every article you put up to all your social media sites?
