[Case Study] Black hat VS Grey hat

I love reading case studies on BHW so I thought I'd make my own.

So I did KW research and found a nice KW with +/- 2k exact searches and a decent CPC. Google's traffic estimator shows max spending of $52/day if I set the CPC and budget high

I find it's a nice estimate. Though perhaps not too accurate when comparing with actual earnings it gives an idea. Both domains are purchased and hosted on Godaddy. The idea with this case study is to somewhat compare results.

I won't do something foolish like bomb my blackhat domain with xrumer links, though I will hit tier 1 fairly hard. If I hit my site straight with xRumer, I'll be splitting 10-15k over different pages on the website. I'll only hit the blackhat one with xRumer. The grey hat domain will simply get less aggressive backlinking hitting it.

I'll be getting backlinks through fiverr and oDesk primarily. This is all I can think off for now. Oh yea, both are EMDs, one is with .org, the other is .net. They are targetting the exact same keyword. I know I'm not filtering out all variables but I hope this case might be somewhat helpful anyway. I'll try and answer questions soonish. Please read through the post to see if I've answered your question before already. The idea is to spend an equal amount of money on backlinks for the two domains. I believe I'll set it at one or two fiverr gigs per week per domain plus oDesk. The hosting is being set up right now. I'm looking to get the two sites indexed without content at first to see if the .net or .org starts better. I'll already now say that the .net will be the greyhat one and the .org will be the blackhat one.

I'll be using free versions of nuclear link indexer and linklicious. Links will be submitted to both at a slow pace. Blackhat should mean aggressive, but clever, not aggressive and stupid.

Wordpress has been installed on both of them, made 1 post on each containing of one sentence with the keyword in it. They're two different sentences but more or less equally long and structure-wise.

Added a site wide link from another site to both of the sites with the same anchor. Manually made 8 web 2.0 though I didn't feed them content just yet. 3-4 of them contain a link to my white hat site (.net). None of them indexed yet.

Ordered an article for both sites and still waiting to receive them before I start building a considerable amount of links. And I want to have the two pages indexed as well to see where they land with basically no backlinking. The .net has an advantage with the 3 web 2.0 links, though I doubt they'll have much weight without content or indexing. I'm kind of considering if I should get my VA to sign up on 1000s of web 2.0 as they might become handy if the white hat site decides to be a good solution.

Yea, I hope to be able to keep it updated. Most case studies die along the way.. I hope it won't be the case with mine. Well, naturally it won't go on for years but I'll try and keep it up for some months.

Only unique on the .net and I might put some spun on the .org as it is blackhat. For now I am just placing one unique article on each.

Made a niche relevant PR3 and PR5 link to the .net and then they are both d0follow with low OBL as well - time consuming but some kick ass juice. They might stick, they might not seeing as they could be considered spam. I'm looking to make more of these killer links over the weekend and hopefully find a VA with a brain as well. Nothing against VAs or the countries they're normally from, I've just been a bit unlucky with the ones I found.

I also added a facebook page and google+ to the .net. Once I get the articles and they've been seen by google I'll start hitting the .org

So today I've added the articles. Added a twitter account to the .net

They still haven't been indexed. I put up a job posting to find a reliable VA for the .net one. Found a lot of high PR low OBL pages for backlinks. Both sites have yet to get indexed. I'll build some more high PR ones tonight and probably find some more high PR once i figure out WTF is wrong with my SB harvester.

The .org (which has no linkbuilding done to it) has been indexed first, surprisingly. According to MS, which has not been very accurate for me for quite some time, it is not in the top 100. I haven't SEOed either of the two websites. Now that the .org has been indexed, backlinking can start.

And I've hired to VAs for under a dollar/hour for the .net.

Alright, so I got 4 VAs working 10 hours each. I'd rather do it like this than hire one for 40 hours as I can then compare them and see who's actually working. The .net is still not indexed, .org is indexed but still not in top 100. It's on page 5 if I sort by the latest week only.

I ordered this 500 bookmarks for the .net and they'll be delivered in around 4-5 days.

No real updates. My VAs are making web 2.0s. The .net is still not indexed which I find slightly weird but oh well. I am making quite a few web 2.0s and then gonna build them up rather than make them hit and run's. I also personally manually registered 15-20 web 2.0s. Just decided to do everything properly this time.

I optimised both sites and put CTR theme on them.

Once they start ranking I think I'll create a WSO </joke>

I sent some blog posts from a private blog network to the .org. Hope the weekend will hopefully get the .net indexed and that I'll see a move into top 100.

Thought I'd make a little update.

micrositemasters.com which I use for rank tracking (because it has a free option for 10 KWs) is saying the .org hit position 16. The bookmarks gig never came through (well I'm not sure if some were made or not, but certainly not all 500 as I had to submit another URL as it was blocked for some reason). Though when I check, I cannot find it at position 16... Oh well.. The .net is still not indexed (Damn you g0ggle!). I've manually made 18 web 2.0 for it and my VAs should also be doing something but I haven't followed up on them. Guess it'll index at a nice position.

Strange.. The .org got deindexed though I've basically done nothing to it. Couldn't find noindex code on it, though I had installed Yoast and had marked a lot as not supposed to be indexed to avoid duplicate content. Here are the exact settings.



So i switched them all off again to see if it changes stuff and if the .net will finally index.

I just believe in keeping everything whitehat.
