I put up a site with almost no content to one subdomain for testing and I hand built like 80 profile links last year to two variations of one local search keyword - 3600 exact searches. Approximately 20 of them are still indexed. Then I drifted away from IM and forgot that site. This brought that site to page 2 and it sat there until in May this year, then it started dropping like a rock. Last time I checked it was on page 15. Now I thought that it was because a VERY slim content that site had and Panda hit it.

Now in July I built a serious site for those keywords and put it up on a new domain. And of course I made 301 redirect from that old subdomain.

Now this new site was well optimized and I also added a several more keywords to subpages. All of them ranked on pages 2-5. I haven't started link building yet.

I added this site to Google webmasters tool and it didn't show any backlinks. Yesterday when I was in webmasters tools it showed some of those old profile links from that old 301 subdomain site.

And if I searched those two keyword variations I built links for last year, my new page has sunk from 3-5th pages to 15-20th pages...

AND all the other keywords have stayed at their respective pages, no movement!!!

Now those pages 15-20 contain REAL CRAP, but my pages are very well optimized internally, so how come? It can't be google dance as I have not built any links yet this year. I'm thinking that google found that 301 redirect and maybe those old backlinks are pushing my site down, as all the other keywords have retained their places almost exactly the same???

I removed that 301 and I'm now waiting when google removes those profile links from webmasters tool (it could take a few weeks). Then I'm going to look how this affects my serps, I will not start link building in the meanwhile...

If this is false then my site has to drop for all my keyword as all of those keywords are closely related. If this is true, then my site has to rise for those two keywords. Let's see...

What could have possessed you to link from a 15th page website (with next to no backlinks) via 301 redirect to a new domain?

Honestly, reread what you did over and over and slap yourself.

It's not my only website and I'm clad if I could learn from it.
