Well, I'm getting older day by day and still haven't got a Car of my own.

I'm not someone who enjoys spending big bucks on the latest sports car but I would love something which is nice to drive, looks fairly nice and suits me.

Budget? Well, anywhere from £5000-15,000. That is probably not A LOT of money but at the moment, that is probably how much I can dish out for a car, considering insurance and other stuff must also be paid.

So.. any suggestions please for cars which will suit a 21 year old lad? Something I can drive to University in style ;)

    Preferable colour - black.

Please post links to images and sources if possible so I can take a close look! Thanks!

you should be able to pick up a nice coupla year old 2nd hand one in the UK in that price range.

they're a dream to drive, I did Sydney to Cairns in 3 days (2400km) in 3 days recently and didn't suffer one bit. If I drive the old Hilux (my plaything) for more than 3 hours my backs screwd for a week.

Wouldn't bother with a "nice" car if you're taking it to uni, you'll just end up driving everyone around and having to pay for the pleasure.

Your insurance will still be expensive as well, so just get a cheap runaround unless you need a car specifically (e.g. to get to your office).

You should be able to pick up something pretty decent for £5k - and then upgrade when you're no longer at uni (if you're anything like me, you won't use it much at uni anyway).

For all those suggesting 'nice' cars, in the UK we get slaughtered for insurance, especially at this age.

I've recently bought myself a 2009 Golf in black. I rate it.

But like Meathead said, i wouldn't want to have one at uni, unless you lived miles out.

a lotus elise supercharged would certainly turn some heads.

under £15,000 but the insurance might be a lot :)

I'm in the UK. Unfortunately at your age, insurance is a ton, for someone who has no previous cars. We're talking £2000 a year, ranges to be honest. Anyway, if that price is to go lower buying a Lamborgini does not help. I can recommend buying a hatchback. My favourite is the Fiat 500, this is fitted with everything, and has a nice interior. Also with this car if you buy it from the official dealer, congestion charge is free. So basically, I recommend the Fiat 500. Nice first car to have.

Shame you've had no previous cars! I am 21 and live in the UK and recently got myself a 2007 BMW 525d - insurance is only £800 but that's because I've got 4 years no claims!

To be honest in a Uni environment, anything over £5k is overkill if you just want a run around.

From my experience Uni's not about cars & flashy shite. Most people are borderline bums or hard up anyway. And as like Meathead said, you could end up being the chaffeur.

Resist the urge to blow £15k, especially if you rent / live with the parents. Be wise, save it and invest it in some property or business project later.

So... 2006 Ford Focus Zetec 1.6 tdCi

    or

    2003 Audi A3 2.0 FSI

Both £5k on Ebay with decent mileage & spec.

    Thats quality for that car.

I'm 22 and paid £1500 (fml) for my golf insurance, and that was the cheapest going!

At uni I wouldnt really recommend buying a car.

If you do I really rate VW. I have a golf tdi, awesome car reliable and great mpg.

What uni you going to by the way?

go for a 320d, you can pick a 2006 up for just over 5k. Its a bargain for the kind of car you get and fuel consumption is good too. Get either a black or white.

Funnily enough I just got a car for a friends younger brother who is studying architecture in uni. I got him a 2007 1.6 tdci focus. Hardly the coolest thing in the world but a good car, cheap to run and buy and will lose very little value for the 2-3 years he will own it
