Anyone know of a way to crack captcha? I read an academic article where they compared the effectiveness of captcha by comparing some program's abilities to a human: the program fared better in all cases. It'd be nice to code something that would do this. I doubt it'd help much on recaptcha, though.

Umm, the best one I know of is Pakistanian keyboard typers
that are just starting out online. They're pretty cheap too:)

As far as anything else, I believe the Asians are the go to sources
for OCR ...if I remember right there is one dude that hands down kicks
the living shit out of captchas. I don't remember his name but I distincly remember when myspace starting cracking down I was having an IM conference with some myspace hardcores that were going to pitch in together and hire him. I believe he charged $10,000. I lost focus and left the conference early but maybe a little digging and you might come up with something.

LOL...

Yea, It was out of mine as well. But if your thinking about
coding, I would truly appreciate you keeping the forum posted
or me at least :)

If you get good with OCR and can crack captcha dude, then your
a VERY valuable resource. I don't know if your doing it to make profits
yourself (on networks), but I would send you enough work from *friends* that your ass would be backlogged for at least a year.

Content, you would become a God if you could somehow devise a program or code to defeat captcha.

I suspect you will be of great use to this forum...

I recently paid a measly $300 on getafreelancer.com for OCR work. The guy cracked the captcha within 2 days using MatLab.

hmmm... Matlab, sounds like my degree in math is coming back into play. Now, matlab is like a programming lang for mathematicians, so it'd be interesting to figure out the equation. Thanks for the tip, though. There are a lot of math libraries out there and I may be able to figure that out.

Captcha breaking software for captchas of the quality of the current myspace are sold at $1500 and slightly weaker ones like craigslist go for $1000.

They use a combination of neural nets and imaging algorithms to separate the characters, so there is a training process where you need to train the software to recognize the letters.

IMHO its not worth spending time cracking captchas for already raped sites like myspace coz they keep changing the capthcas too often and your initial investment is wasted. Cheaper to hire people in India or China to type in captchas for you.

Well, I spent a couple hours yesterday studying artificial neural networks and while I could probably create one relatively quickly, to create a reliable, quality version would be more work than it's worth at this point as I just don't have the time to do the months of study it'd require to be able to create these things like they ought to be created.

There are a lot of cracks for captchas. Most don't involve any kind of AI, or even OCR (optical character recognition). There are a lot of common flaws out there that let you bypass a captcha w/o any hard work, search for exploits and you'll find them.

The rest typically use some clever OCR stuff.

That project was done years ago, technology has improved enough it could probably do even better. Even those "uncrackable" captchas like "re-captcha" could be broken with the right filters applied before the OCR phase.

Still might be cheaper to outsource tho, hard to say.

i recently came off employment with a ticket broker, he had an automated software that would go in and pull tickets from ticketmaster when an onsale happened, and display them to the user seeing if they wanted to buy them or not. he would get some really good seats.

anyway,

the backend of the software was used here...

www(dot)transym(dot)com

its a simple program, but if u buy it u get the api and can solve some captchas with a little tweaking...

I agree with Ruck and Nova, From personal experience it's much cheaper to just outsource the work to china or india. They are more than happy to do it for you.
