Does Wordpress correct these automatically? I have installed All in one SEO pack and not sure if I should tick the Canonical URL there or not?

I'm not familiar with that particular plug-in. You have to be careful because a lot of the SEO plug-ins out there are couterproductive and can actually harm your site. I recommend the Yoast WordPress SEO Plugin.

In general, canonical links are important in order to protect your site from Panda-related problems due to duplicate content issues. In other words, you don't want to have multiple copies of the same page on your site, each with a different URL. That's where canonical links come into play. Supplying a canonical link to all pages with the exact same content tells Google to use the one with the URL specified in the canonical links and ignore the rest of the pages.
