Cannot host amazon images on affiliate site?

I have just recently set up an affiliate site and according to a few different amazon associates representatives I spoke to, I cannot download and display pictures of the amazon items on my website, I can only use links hosted by amazon on my website to display the pictures. Is that really true? or do they not know what they are talking about

That is only true if you're using their API. If you are not, that clause doesn't apply to you.

Take a look at "11. Limited License" in this page https://affiliate-program.amazon.com/gp/associates/agreement/. It says you can "copy and display the Content solely on your site". Images are defined as part of the Content in the same document. This "copy and display" probably means that hosting the images on your server is fine.
