Or are they all just lying in the hopes that most users will be p2p downloading uploading and therefore never a real problem?

Torrent freak usually has a nice comparison article on who all is logging vs not.

Well, some claim to not be logging anything, but can you really be sure?

Of course not. All your data goes through their servers first. You should not trust anyone that has so much access to your data like that.

No, most VPNs, which don't log, actually don't log your traffic, but they log once you turn on and off the VPN.
Besides that, VPNs aren't mean for anonymous people - they are just advertised this way. I barely know any VPN which doesn't log (except of this one of which I can't remember the name - it became known as it weren't able to provide logs in court of someone who was sued for selling drugs.)
In general, I'd go for a VPN which is known for / has resisted in the past against a lawsuit ;)

I would think the free ones for sure log and probably sell the data. Like they say: if you aren't paying for the product you are the product.

The paid ones are less likely to do so, as the comments above talk about, but this day and age it's hard to know for sure.

Use as much protection as you can. I use Nord - for various reasons. Different computers, Tor, rotational browsers and further. Also, use differing connections and if on a mac/ any computer hide as much as you can via a changer. Security has stepped up these days!

Oh, and ideally pay via Monero. :)

nope, but I use them anyway until I am finished building my own VPN app (to go through one of my servers) and then I'll make a company for it so if someone wants a true no logging, they can use mine. Since I want to stay anonymous myself, and using my own VPN, I will be overwriting logs every 5 minutes with gibberish that way even if the server is seized then there is no useable data. Now there are some things that need to be logged for analytics and ensuring you are not abusing the VPN (say I allow 5 connections from your account at one time, I need to log that your account has made a connection to ensure you do not go over 5)

Always use double protection, like VPN plus tor-browser. Or VPN plus incognito.

If you were sharing images like what the person in this case was sharing do you really want them protecting you?

I guess for self preservation you might but society as a whole doesn't.

I think if you are engaged in highly illegal activity and get "caught" as blatantly as that person did you are screwed.

There might be ways to stay hidden but its not a vpn that you can find on google.

if a service is free that means the user is the product being sold. there's no such thing as a free lunch.

5 Reasons You Need To Stop Using Free VPNs Right Now

"Free VPN's are in many cases worse than no VPN. Might be a couple that are ok, but recent paper from EFF found most log, track, sell ur data"

A recent CSIRO study investigated 283 VPNs. It found that 75 percent of free VPN apps contained some form of tracking.

I tend to use iPredator (No affiliation, believe they are run by the guys behind Pirate Bay).

They swear they'd burn down their servers before giving away logs. Unsure how true that would be though!

They all keep logs. They can claim they don't, but unless you hack their servers, can you be sure? They might delete some old logs, but the recent ones are being saved 100%.

They won't put the whole company in jeopardy just to keep their word of not keeping the logs.

Don't forget that if they don't keep logs, they are viable for the crime.

short answer NO
there has been many attacks those last months on VPN companies so the attackers is exploiting to start an MITM ( man in the middle) attack and he sniff all traffic including logins data/ credits cards ....
