You saw a shirt for $97. You didn?t have the cash, so you borrowed $50 from your mum and $50 from your dad = $100. You bought the shirt, and had $3 change. You gave your dad $1 and your mum $1 and kept the other $1 for yourself. Now you owe your mum $49 and your dad $49. 49+49 = 98 + your $1 = 99. Where is the missing $1?

Well in reality you may have borrowed $50 from each parent although out
of each $50 you only spent $48.50 from each.

$48.50 x 2 = $97 and you have $3 out of the hundred remaining
If you gave Mom $1 and Dad $1 and the son kept the other Dollar

I'd say mathematically it's all good!
And you my friend need to revisit Math 101...lol j/k

Well actually you didn't settle the money math properly ;)

You borrow 100$ no matter how many slices of it.

You keep 1$ so you owe 99$ to your mum and dad

you give them 1$ each so you owe 97$ / 2 = 48.5 ;)

What you did is you count 4 in giving back instead of 3.

Good mind game ;)
 
$97 = Shirt

$1 = mom

$1 = Dad

$1 = you.

97+3=100?

there is no missing $1 :P

Old Trick to confuse..

But in real Math.. the point of adding 49$ debt each and your Own 1$. and expecting it to equal to a round figure 100$ which was a previous debt and longer valid is incorrect...

49$ x 2 is the new debt.
100$ is old debt and no longer valid.
1$ shouldn't come into picture for the new debt 49$ x 2=98$
S, when u talk bout 100$, you are allowed to speak bout 1$ of yours. else its invalid entity..

The rest of your equation though is an error in logic. There is no missing dollar.

You gave your parents back $2 so that balances it back to the $100 borrowed. (98+2=100)

The extra dollar you keep isn't an addition to the 98 it's a subtraction. You've now borrowed $98, kept $1 for yourself and used the rest to buy the $97 shirt. (98-1=97)

Money That You Owe Your Dad & Mum
100 - 2 = 49 + 49 = 98

Value That You Have in Hand (Shirt & $1)
97 + 1 = 98

You have no money in the begining. After you borrowed money, buy shirt, return some money back to your parents, you get $98 value in hand, and you owe your parents $98.

There's no money loss.
98 = 98
 
You borrowed 50$ from both parents. You bought the shirt (97$). So that means you owe to your parents 1.50x2 . But you gave them 1x2 . So that means the remaining 0.50x2 is the dollar missing.

But wait, you kept 1$ ..... Damn ..... At the time of writing I thought I was right!
