Can you rank a free domain website?

I haven't ranked one personally for a competitive keyword but I've used them in SEO tests for other things and they seem to behave the same as a normal tld like .com
I've also seen Google "say" they don't treat unusual none geographic TLDs differently.
I'd say your biggest issue will be what your customers think of a weird tld.

There are multiple issues with those domains. The fact of not owning the domain in any sense is not helpful. Unless you are going for a churn and burn business this is a big issue.
If I had 0 money and you let me choose, I will definitely prefer to go with a medium site rather than a .tk/freenom site.
In fact I run some quality web 2.0 that serve for a higher purpose apart from other adequate owned domains.
For testing purposes, you won't have issues with any of the two. You can submit either to Google Search Console and index to your convenience.
If you need the freedom of having to use your own server in a free host or your own machine, then I would go for an owned domain. In fact, you can own the freenom domains for $7/year, which are mostly regional TLD not general (CF central africa, TK tokelau, GA gabon, etc...)
Also you can get some general domains nowadays for peanuts for example ".win" costs no more than $3 year and the renewal is exactly the same $3/year.

And you could look for a sale on .com or .net or even .org/.info domain names for the first year and get them that way.
By year 2, hopefully, you would have made some money for renewals.

Yep, if you want to rank in English countries.
E.g. Com/Net/Org - these don't have any "extra" weight or country specifics don't have any less authority... But google used country specific domain as localized versions. For example - If we add a .in domain domain in search console, google will suggest India as targeted country (But you can change that as well and then google won't treat the domain as targeted to India).

even i saw free blogspot domain like forexample.blogspot.com is ranked on top for many keywords.
but they are really hard to rank in a short time recently.
I think those TLDs pretty much the same.
better go with normal .com / .net

Yes, I have seen several wordpress.com domains rank high enough.

Pointing two URLs to the same website is a good way to direct traffic to your sit from several similar domain name .
