Can someone tell me why VPN is needed when creating backlinks?

On the internet different bloggers are suggesting to use a VPN software when creating backlinks like hidemyass, however I dont understand the reason. I dont think Google can know from which IP address the user has submitted any article to any platform. If i have added different articles to tumblr, facebook... Google wont know my IP only the platform i am using can know my IP. For example if i am posting to tumblr then only tumblr will know my ip and not Google. Can someone explain to me why VPN is needed and is there anything misunderstood to me. Thank you.

I think you should use SSH to create backlinks . It's cheaper than VPN.

hidemyass is crap they ripped me off use private proxies

For me, VPN is not helpful for backlink process.
