Can someone please explain markups?

I want to add markups to all my pages but I can't find an all-in-one plugin. A lot of plugins will step on each others toes too. For example, if I have both Yoast and RankMath active then Google sees 2 meta descriptions.

Yoast takes care of Open Graph Protocol and Twitter cards, but how do I implement Schema and Microformats? A competitor of mine (according to the Structured Data Testing Tool) has ImageObject, BreadcrumbList, ItemList, CreativeWork, and WebSite.

They have the rich snippet for my keyword and I believe I need this structured data to qualify to rank. Meanwhile, I have only hentry and WebPage.

I'm not even 100% on how Google is seeing these and why. I understand that markups essentially serve as background code that lets search engines better understand your content, but that's about it.


Someone please alleviate my ignorance.

The Pro version of Yoast will implement these.

For more specific markups you would need something like Schema PRO:

Thanks! I definitely don't have the money for Pro versions of anything unfortunately. I found this free plugin for Structured Data but when I activate it ALL my markups go away. I don't understand.

For 'best' and 'top 10' keywords, do I use the Article Schema markup? Or should I use Review? I just want to add ItemList like my competitor has so I qualify for rich snippets.

For Yoast premium you could use Festinger´s uploads:

He posts new versions on a regular basis so you can update it when needed.

For 'Best x' and 'Top 10 x' ItemList rich snippets you don't need a plugin or schema markup, instead you need to structure your post in such a way that google picks it up as a list it can use as an answer in the search results.

Thanks! Very useful info. I've been structuring my posts like that anyway since I noticed my competitors doing the same. I kept going back and forth on something though and that robbie richards article reminded of it. He mentioned those websites using H2 tags for google to pick it up as a list. Do you think it's a better practice to use the H2 tag for my target keyword, then use H3 tags for my list?

You mean switching H2 and H3 within the list? I wouldn't do that, try to keep it consistent. Just use H2 tags for all the items in the list. You can try bolding your keywords for a little more emphasis.

No I mean, for example- H2 tag: Tips on How to Troubleshoot Your Engine (target keyword)

Then all my H3 tags are the tips

Well, if you have multiple lists try both and see what works best. Personally I would think that making the list H2 is more effective when trying to get it indexed as a ListItem because it places more emphasis on the list, and not the keyword alone. The keyword will then be picked up and displayed in the search result anyway.
