Russians dont play the Google game, most of the Russians use Yandex. They are not ahead and not behind, they are in the parallel universe.

how does the gateway benefit them if the keywords arent in their niche?
beej1990 gave the url of the main page directory listing. Go to that page and click each of the links individually. Notice how some of the files fir a forbidden error while others can be viewed. What might be in those forbidden files. That directory page is a Linux based page. In *nix just because a page may be a php or .so does not mean that it is an executable file. In *nix you have to specifically set a file to be executable with the command of Chmod +x filename. If the executable file is not set, the file is not executable. If a file is not executable, it could very well be a configuration file, or a file of keywords, or a database, or just about anything else depending on how the person chooses to use it.
The next thing that you have to understand is that a keyword is not what you think it is.

The only way to explain is for you to experiment. I could tell you all day and I would only get argument from others. So, buy a cheap domain on Hostgator. Build a simple html webpage that uses keywords at a rate of 3 - ten percent for where you want to place it - I would suggest something that is not congested, but that does have a few legitimate entries. Let me know the site and I will index it for you. The process will give you a little better than 400 backlinks to start. Very slowly begin building links to it but use bogus keywords. for widget A, use a widget B or horse manure, or whatever. After a few weeks, go look for those keywords is a search. Where are they? They might be under a search for your domain many pages back, but you will find them under the keyword that you made the link with. You will have to experiment with the idea to fully understand it and how to properly use it to conceal your footprint.

Cloaking a door way page on a site you own is one thing. I just dont understand how they did it on those domains which they dont own.?
