Can somebody explain this - monthly searches vs impressions

Using Google keywords tool I looked up the keywords "makeup tips"

makeup tips 368,000(global searches)

Below are the stats from webmaster tools


makeup tips 5,500(impressions) 16(clicks) 6.8 (average position)

how come ? If the site is listed on the first page, shouldn't the site be getting more impressions ?

makeup tips has 27,100 exact match searches.

The 368,000 number you have is broad match, which includes every search that has the word "makeup tips" in it, such as "professional makeup tips" and "best makeup tips" and "makeup application tips," etc. You have to go by exact match searches, not broad searches, or you'll get way too high of numbers.
