Can some provide some information pixel tracking?

I've just started to get into affiliate marketing for a couple of sites. And I've just been using links and graphics but there is a section for pixel tracking.

I've done some googling and searching here but can't find any real answers on how to setup tracking. There is some software from Cake ... but by the looks of the website this isn't something I'd be able to deal with.

Can someone point to me some information on pixel tracking, how to track and which software/company to use? Also, is this only tracking or is this a resource that will show ads across a clients browsing sessions? Is tracking worth the effort to get it started?
