I'm starting a new forum and the subject matter is quite controversial. The site will be under scrutiny and there is a good possibility that the could get penalized or delisted.

My question is, if I set this site up on my VPS, with it's own IP and private name servers, if it does get penalized, could it effect my other money sites on the same VPS?

There isn't a definitive answer unfortunately, Google claims they care little to not at all about websites IP address while "SEO Experts" claim you need dedicated IP's from as many different subnets as you possibly can.

I host all of my sites on a small handful of IPs (numerous sites per IP) and honestly never once had one site effective another (IE. Google sandboxed a few sites, but it didn't effect others on the same IP).

Most the SEO needing dedicated IP's will come from people trying to sell you a service, rarely will you actually have an SEO Experts tell you to go buy blocks of IP's etc.

You do realize that even huge websites with tons of illegal content don't normally get de-listed from Google right? Even stuff like The Pirate bay is still indexed.
