Can NEW forums be successful in 2017?

Find a niche where you can provide usefull informations and users will sing up. The hard part is the content. Don't expect big results from the beginning, it will take time to populate it

I do not have much experience with this. I wrote some posts for a new forum for a guy in 2012 I guess. He started with lot of expectations but gave up soon. He was trying to copy a webmaster forum and had no interest in that niche. So, it is better if you have some interest in that field.

To be able to monetise a forum you will need to populate it well and to do thst you will need good content the niche demands.
Once you have the things your targets value you will start increasing your numbers

It also takes significant time to get your forum to make you good money so be ready to be in for the long haul.

I was asking myself the same question, forums used to be very popular (especially vBulletins, I was subscribed to a few of those), now it seems like people just go to Reddit or whatever.. and only the forums with long-standing/established communities managed to survive.

Not easy for niches that have been established for years. But you can probably do it for new niches, in my opinion.

Yes Krishna, that's a distinct possibility even with a moderately successful forum. We did encounter IP harvesters frequently and were ddosed a couple of times,though the ddos were initiated by someone we knew personally. All this happened when we crossed 100k users mark.

We started it ourselves, reading up tutorials from VBulletin themselves, without much knowledge in the way of coding. Freelancers were quite expensive back then. Whenever we were stuck somewhere we did take help from the guy who provided us the hosting services from time to time as his service was free for us (paid in beer and some pot) and he was more competent than us.
