I would like to join groups and post occasionally to them. Everything I do will be manual, browser-based, and not a bot. Can I get away with using a VPN and not buy proxies? I plan on running multiple accounts, but using a different VPN location for each of them.

Doubt you'll get away with that, if you're not planning on having many FB accounts you can just simply use your home internet connection, the IP will be probably less abused than a VPN, and in the end, it won't make much difference from a regular home use with 4 or 5 family members and few friends visiting everywhile using FB.

Don't want to disappoint, but chance of that working is close to 0. Facebook is extremely good at figuring out fake accounts. In fact they're so good, that even using 4g or residential proxies there's no guarantee you'll be safe.

In any case, if you really want to work with Facebook accounts, get a proxy (not a free one!). In the end it will save you both time and money.

Proxies are a better option than a VPN “if” you tried this.

Not recommended. My suggestion would be to use 4G mobile proxies

how many accounts are "multiple accounts"? will these be new accounts, or aged accounts? will you phone verify them?

2-3 account you can use without proxy or vpn, if you already not burned your home ip.
use different browser for each account.

You should understand that if you want to run multiple account then you must have stealth browser profiles. VPN is not issue all the time browser fingerprints are always the thing that will lead you to account gets in trouble so you must use Stealh browser profiles if you want to manager multiple profiles also if possible residential IPs are good fit for your kind of tasks/actions.
