Basically I want a small basic version of something like blogspot. I want to run 5 or 6 blogs seperately under 1 domain ie: www,xxx.c0m/bill etc
Can this be done easily and above all cheaply?
I would like each person to obviously have a seperate log in so each person can only blog on their own blog.
    Many thanks

Absolutely, it wouldn't cost anything other than hosting and the domain name. Just have 5 separate Wordpress installations (or whatever platform you choose).

The easiest way I have found is to use wp-hive. It allows you to run several separate blogs off of 1 wordpress installation. I found it easier to use than wpmu if you are only doing a small amount of blogs. I think you would have to set them up as sub-domains like www,bill,xxx.c0m instead of www,xxx.c0m/bill . One of the benefits to using 1 wordpress installation is that you can update the software to all of them at once, so it is easier to maintain.

If you are looking to maintain all the blogs on the domain I would go with the individual installs of WP. You should be able to auto install from your hosting control panel...Look for "Fantastico."

If the goal is to have individuals running their own blogs, then you still could use your Fantastico in your CP. The draw back would be that you would need to do the install for them.

Otherwise you could look for a clone of one of the more popular blog hosting sites.

You can even create separate subdomain names for them like

    domainname1.yourdomain.com
    domainname2.yourdomain.com

etc to give it your own branding
