Can I rank without having backlinks?

Yeah, you can rank keywords with low competition and need to update content with high quality and relevancy. You could get organic results at some point but to go for a push of top results might need few links.

If you target long tail keywords that are included in good content, you might be able to rank them without backlinks. But only until a site that has backlinks targets the same keywords.

Well, you can target super long tails but link building is very important, especially for new sites.
 
Yes, it's possible with the right key words and high equality content but having backlinks is a big advantage.
 
Compettion if low, yes okay you can do, But some quality backlinks not bad for websites.
 
Build from the easiest keywords, and wait for google to put some natural authority on your website. Don't even look at the big boys, chase everything they don't cover. After that, start with the second tier of keywords. Move trough the levels and after some time you can outrank everyone.

But in other way, it will be automatically shared in many other places in the form of backlinks if the content is really worthy and interesting.

Content has the ability to market itself.
