Can I Rank My Website?

Hi everyone,
I recently launched a website and would appreciate your advice.

I researched some low-competition keywords using ahrefs (0-20 KD). During the research phase, I thought KD was all that mattered. Then I looked at the top-ranking results, and on most of the articles are from quite authoritative (High DA) websites (There are some smaller websites ranking among them here and there.) Yet they don't have many referring domains to their articles.

Is it possible for me to outrank them with a new website if I publish content to build topical authority and then get links to those articles?

you can definitely outrank those smaller websites. If small / new websites outrank bigger ones you know for sure that there's room for sneaking in.

When doing keyword research focus more on analyzing the content and the DF backlinks of the pages that rank. If you see low quality, or no content, and no / few DF links it means you have a good chance of ranking.

Last year I would have advised you to check how many big brands are ranking on page 1, but google is a fucking mess nowadays and everyone ranks left and right with AI content.

If you can produce better content than what's currently ranking for your chosen keywords I think you can outrank pretty much anyone, even without backlinks in many cases. But you would probably need topical authority and good site structure. Have a look at this thread:

Rule of thumb:
If you see authority sites on all top10 positions, especially top 3 on most of the search results for your keywords, skip the niche, else go for it.

  1. Publish Relevant, Authoritative Content.
  2. Update Your Content Regularly
  3. Metadata
  4. Have a link-worthy site
  5. Use alt tags

I'm going to give it a try. I'll attempt to rank for the smaller keywords to get some traction initially.

The niche I'm targeting is simply the listicles of different products. So I think the best way to stand out is by having a better UX and more products to offer readers.

Now I have to find a sub-niche to target. Major keywords will be impossible to rank for without backlinks, I think.
I'm about to start a case study about the journey and see how it goes.

The niche allows me to write about quite a lot of things. Some topics are crowded with Authority Sites, and some have space for me to sneak in.
That's why I think I have to find a good angle for my content instead of skipping the niche.

You have to try and see it yourself. Sometimes it seems like a low competitive keyword is enough hard to rank in reality but sometimes it is not. But as you said, if for a keyword, you see a lot of websites ranking that comprises of high-authority, medium, and low-authority websites, up to the 3rd page, just skip that keyword for now.

Yeah, I just found some competitors in my niche with low (>20) DRs. I wrote down their ranking keywords and got ideas for over 100 posts.

Most of those posts get less than 100 visitors per month. Yet, it's much better than competing with high-authority websites straight away.
Once I publish a good amount of articles, the traffic should add up nicely too.

Let's see how it goes.

If you think so then go full Monty at it.
 
If you are seeing some smaller sites in the SERPs. Then yes, you can also sneak into SERPs with your new domain.

But yes, you must build topical authority to beat your competitors.
