Can I offer a discount on a service in return for a backlink?

Or will that eventually get me deindexed?

Example:

I offer xyz service but if you put a backlink on your website such as "xyz service by sombrero negro" I will give you $50 dollars off.

I do not think that can cause you any harm. vbulletin uses that concept but instead of a discount they charge more to remove the copyright notice and backlink in the footer. But technically it's the same thing you want to do.

$50 is an expensive backlink..
what if they just link to you from a crap pr0 site?

Doesn't seem any different in principle than g00gle AW. - You pay your money (in this case as a bit of your profit), and you buy your link.

Whether it's worth doing that as a purely backlink strategy is another matter, and I'd think not (unless you only target high PR sites) due to the work involved, and the ease with which backlinks can be had elsewhere.

If you're doing it as more of an marketing ploy it might be better to just offer the discount , and don't complicate things for them.

Just my thoughts...

This is primarily the case and the backlink (besides being a backlink) is mostly being used to qualify the consumer for further products (and vice versa). I'm getting their information either way. As far as $50 bucks being an expensive backlink... I'd have to agree ;). Just an example and not the real life situation. I'm actually earning pennies on the dollar on this service after I pay off the outsourcing. The main objective is to collect as many peoples contact information as possible to market other products to (which we have much better margins on) by offering our target demographic a service they want at a price they cant refuse .
