I want to use part of someone else's thumbnail and my add text besides it. Can this get me in trouble? Can the creator/artist copyright strike me for using his thumbnail/art?

Yes, most likely.

Why don't you make your own using free membership from Canva or a similar service.

Of course. Just make a similar with same props.

Using someone else's thumbnail without permission can result in a copyright strike. The creator owns the copyright, and they can take action against you. Seek permission or use public domain thumbnails to avoid issues and protect your YouTube channel.

Yes that is possible. Even if you use someone face in your thumbnail, that can also be an issue.
