Can I do this with paypal??

I have a product that will have the following price structure:

$1997 + $399 per month
OR with payment plan
$1247 first month, $1247 second month then $399 per month

Can I set that up using paypal subscription payments?

I believe so... I am not sure exact method but there is always a crude method which you can use.

You will set One time payment of X for first time...
You will set subscription which will charge customer for Y amount after 1 month of purchase date and then it will terminate..
You will set another subscription of amount Z which will start after 1 month of Y or 2 month of X and will keep running...

If you go for first payment plan then it will be easy because you will charge X amount one time and subscription of Y amount every month...

You can get more details from paypal support.... I have used similar option with some CRM in past so paypal should not be much different.

Make sure you have a fully verified account and it's aged quite well and better still, it's with your details.

Paypal takes a closer look on subscriptions, and if they look tad bit suspicious, you might lose all the subscriptions and perhaps your paypal account.

Subscriptions tend to be more high risk, and also you didn't mention what kind of product you're selling. Make sure everything adds up in the eyes of paypal and also, call them up and talk to them about it, so that there will be notes on your account about it, which means there is a higher chance that this thing in legit in their accounts...

A better way to go with this is to get a 3rd party merchant account like 2checkout.

I agree a 3rd party merchant account is the best solution long term

I'm not sure PayPal allows this but I have seen Plimus allowing this kind of set up. Your clients can still pay through Paypal when you use Plimus.

i know clickbank has some subscription products. don't know if that would help you.
