Interested in this as well. I have heard you can beat such sites because your site might be more specific, and it would help to have an EMD, and a lot of HQ backlinks.

However I am a total rookie.

No way you are going to outrank webmd and massive authority websites like that unless you have a lot of bank roll behind you.

Dude think positive and give your best shot. You never know what google does. You might become the lucky one ( ofcourse if you work hard).

    EDIT:
As for the suggestion, you want to make your link profile look natural. Don't put 100K links in one day as for example. I won't recommend you to do blog commenting atall. I am not an expert in this but I have not got any success doing so. It has done harm instead of doing good.

Yes you can absolutely out rank these sites. I outrank Wikipedia, Yelp, RipoffReport, etc. for my clients every single day.

I have a health niche site but I always find different (and easier) keywords to rank for. That way I don't have to worry about outranking a monster like webmd. I don't think it would be easy at all to try and outrank them. I'm sure it's possible but I'd rather not go there. They've got tons of people working for them. Work smarter, not harder is my motto.

I wouldn't get crazy worrying about the high level terms. Just write good quality content that people will enjoy reading and you will naturally get links. Add some high quality linking on top and be patient. Treat it like your baby and be passionate about it. The rest will follow.

I agree. Google has explicitly said they interfere and have a diff set of rules when it comes to your money or your health. This is part of the reason authority sites rank well in these niches. Provide valuable content, use forums. Even if you rank #2 under webmd, that's perfectly fine.

I have a client in the medical niche and so I am familiar with WebMD and it is a monster. I don't think you will outrank it, however those stats regarding #1, #2 & #3 volume percentages are averages and are not going to directly apply to every single niche or set of search results.

I avoid WebMd. There's just something about it that I don't like. Maybe everything. But, everytime I click into WebMd, there's a part of me that completely rejects it. I won't read it, click deeper into it, nothing. I just hate it, don't know why and don't care to know why.

And, if other people are like me, they will do what I do, which is to either dig lower on the results or alter the search terms in order to exclude or push WebMd down. One think I've learned is that I am a leader of a group of people, and if it's true for me it's true for others. Whether that group is 1% or 90% of the population is the question. So for the OP, I recommend going through the motions of his hope-for visitor and find a way to avoid WebMd and find his site instead, whether it be by content & onpage SEO or whatever. Also, the long tail keywords give the little guy a fighting chance, as WebMd cannot have ALL of them.
