Hey Guys, I've been a member of this forum for a while, never really contributed though, so I'll let this serve as an introduction post, as well as hopefully raise a debate or something along those lines.
So, I was looking through Google Trends the other day. I spotted an interesting looking search phrase. Basically, I did some research on it. Found it to have absolutely zero competition, and according to Google Keyword Tool, half a MILLION searches per month. So, seeing a possible opportunity, I wrote an article on my blog to rank for this phrase. Instant first spot on Google for the phrase. Day 1, no traffic. Day 3, no traffic. I'm guessing that either Google had a very incorrect traffic estimate, or because I was looking through trends, that's all it was. A trend. No more searches. No more traffic. Thoughts?

Were you looking at the exact match search volumes? That's a newbie error to look at broad match results, shows 500k searches a month and in exact it shows 0... Sorry.

Exact matches dude :) 450 000 global. I admit the local searches are a lot lower though, so perhaps that's my problem.

Check those numbers with semrush or wordtracker or some other 3rd party tool to compare, maybe it's just a glitch in Google's system. Also are you 100% sure you're number one in Google without any search history, personalized search results etc skewing the picture?

Sorry to ask the obvious, but are you searching whilst logged into Google? You may not be top for everyone else. Use Chrome in Incognito mode...

Check out google insights to see if the trend is over.

Thanks for the replies guys. There's no doubt about it, I'm number 1 for my region as far as I know. Logged in and logged out the results are the same. PM me and I will let you check the phrase out for yourself.

pm me if you want and i will check it and tell you where's the problem

I definitely think Google can be wrong.

My site is #1 but Google has it at #126 :)

Know what? If you can get traffic from this, the good for you. The phrase is "xxxxxx"
Check out the global searches. Tell me if my data is wrong.

Dude remove your keyphrase now...otherwise the rest of bhw will take it...

And no the data looks right 27k in the USA and 400k+ global although I just checked in Semrush using that same phrase and it says "no results found"...possibly a glitch

Weird stuff dude. Thanks for confirming anyways. Thought I hit a goldmine at first :o

Happened to me a few times before too. Gets the adrenaline going but unfortunately it didn't turn out for the better this time. But there are always other keywords :)

Definitely :) thing about trends too is they can disappear as quickly as they came :) Not planning on giving up anytime soon.

Best thing to do for this is add your website to Google Webmaster tools.

It will show you accurately where you rank for what kw's and also show you how many Impressions your website got from what KW's in google.

This info in GWT is just something you cannot live without.

Sometimes you see you get arount 5000 impressions for a kw but no traffic and you see you are listed 10th place in google. This really inspires you to get
to the 1st spot for that kw. So this helps you also to build your BL's , authority, pr, etc .

Yes check in the GWT, it may give you clear results of your site, and one more thing google may also wrong :P But sometimes
