Can competitors mess with your google ads campaign?

For example, can they click your ad placement that results you paying for it?

Or worse, can they use a bot with proxies to do that with unique browser settings and other things?

Just wondering here, started my first google ad campaign with a daily budget of 131 USD.

Within 3 hours google has spent 500 USD. That is just insane and has results are only 100 clicks and I stopped the ads completely. I could spend 1000 $ a month for SEO to get first page ranking for this niche.

Not saying that the competitors are messing with my campaign today, but this made me think what they could do if they wanted to. So my question is, is this possible or not? I don't see how could google prevent this happening.

Thanks.

They absolutely can and it happens. There are services out there to prevent it with varying results it really depends on how hard your competition is trying. If you're running display ads it gets even worse.

Ran into this myself recently and it absolutely happens.

Yeah I got charged 400 % within 3 hours of my daily budget.

Did some google search and there are people that got 600 % for 3 hours. This is just insane.

Yes when they bid on your brand keywords especially.

In my experience, the only place they work is on the services sales page. It might take out the low hanging fruit but it won't stop someone dedicated.

It was very recently I ran into how common this is.

Hi OP,

Yes what you are referring to is known as click fraud and quite common in the PPC world.

Google does has a system in place where they will reimburse you for any clicks that they see as being fraudulent and an attempt by your competitors to drain your budget.

You can also contact Google if you see that they have not been able to identify all the fraud clicks.

Best of luck,
Mark
