I'm looking to build a similar website to this one. I'm considering prestashop, opencart, a wordpress plugin. I need something that can create vendor stores but also allow for quantity purchasing and has search capablity or product sorting if it all possible. Which shopping cart or platform do you think would be best for something like this?

If you're looking to build something serious, consider Magento. It's an open-source CMS that's backed by Ebay, huge community support and lots of extensions available.

I was looking for anything but magento since I keep hearing it's tougher to work with. However, I may have to go that route since I have nice list of things I want this site to be able to do.

Don't be afraid of Magento :)
It's actually a lot better than what it used to be with the recent updates. I've developed a few stores and some of the features on it allow me to stay ahead of the curve.

Seeing those themes available on Magento makes it even better for you. Good luck with your store.

Its a custom built website using HeadJS.

You could easily build something similar with Drupal + Drupal Commerce Kickstart

personally I would stay away from Mageto, its been coded by a bunch of monkeys.
