Can Anyone tell me how exactly Backlinks work?

some of the links usually get deleted and not shown by third party tools and its perfectly fine.

Ahrefs updates its index and cleans out what it considers 'dead' links or links it no longer crawls. Could be those 8.8k included links that are now gone or deemed low quality. It's not always about spam; could be sites went down, or their backlinks pages got deindexed. Check your site's backlink profile for the links' quality and relevance.

If those links were not spammy, then it might be as a result of a Google update, which could have resulted in changes to how they evaluate and count backlinks.
