Can anyone recommend an alternative to google analytics?

I also second statcounter as an alternative. Are you doing SEO with the niche site?

Piwik really good,
you'll have to spend time on installing and reading tutorials, but the result is worth it!
 
clicky gives shit load of information and is by far the most accurate
 
Yandex Metrica here too, but if you don't trust Russia networks, avoid it.
 
Google Analytics is the best choice for the analysis and monitoring your site! There are many analogues, but they still do not reach the level of G.Analytics
but if you have no choice, in your place I would choose piwik!

There is no reason to not trust "russian networks", in particular Yandex is gigantic company. I know a Yandex expert and I've heard from him (and from other ppl as well) that in many ways G copies a certain technologies and approaches from Yandex (technologies espionage).
 
Well one more vote for yandex..Much better than GA
